Jaclyn is not interested in her brother
At number 10, Jaclyn is doing the washing up, as Brenda comments, “These photos of Dylan and Sara are enough to make you sick – when are they back?”   Jaclyn is not quite sure, and neither does she care;
"What are the plans for tonight?"
Gerwyn comes in and asks what the plans are for tonight’
Tesni announces that she and Guto are going to a party,
"We should all be together"
but their father overrules that;  “This family has had a difficult year, so we should be together – we’ll go to the Deri!”
"We have to spend less now"
Jaclyn points out that they have to spend less now she has no job, and suggests that they have a takeaway.
“Takeaways are free now, are they?” demands Guto, and offers the compromise, “We’ll go to the party after the Deri.”
Water leaking through the ceiling . . .
Then Gerwyn hears a strange noise and notices water dripping from the light fitting;
. . . and Jaclyn knows its source . . .
“Is the bath running?” he demands,
. . .  the (rather blurred) overflowing bath
and we have a glimpse of the overflowing bath upstairs.   Someone rushes to turn it off, and Jaclyn shouts that no one should touch the electrics.
Ifan demonstrates his artistic talents
At Bryntirion, Ifan is doing some painting, with his father’s supervision;
"A big wheel at the back of a tractor"
“You have to put a big wheel on the back when you draw a tractor,” Jason advises.
Diane is looking pensive, and enquires, “Do you think Dai has been different this week?”
"Well, he's still ugly!"
Jason replies that he is still ugly, but his mother recalls that the explosion at Pwll Bach happened this time last year.
"It will have to be a quiet night in tonight"
“I think it will have to be a quiet night in tonight – but do you think he’ll agree to that?”
Jason says that it depends on what she cooks;
"If there's a steak on the go"
“If there’s a steak on the go . . . well, I’m going out for a couple of pints tonight, because Mami’s back from her holiday today, isn’t she, Ifan?   Which means Dadi can enjoy himself.”
Diane warns him not to go wild, but he predicts that he will be in bed by midnight, as he has had a busy week.
"Busy?   You don't know the meaning of the word!"
Dai comes in, scoffing, “Busy?   You don’t know the meaning of the word!”   Diane informs him that it is steak for dinner tonight, and the bottle of Rioja that DJ gave them for Christmas.
"I'm going to the Golf Club tonight"
Dai answers that he will be going to the Golf Club tonight, but she instructs him, “And afterwards you’re coming home to have dinner with your wife!”   He is not sure about that, but Diane certainly is, and he moans that it is like living in a nanny state.
The sports page has been defaced
Then when he tries to look at the sports page of the Western Post, he finds it covered in red paint.
The drying-off procedure continues
At number 10, the water is being mopped up, and Jaclyn cannot imagine how she forgot she left the bath running.   No-one is allowed to use the shower until
someone looks at it, and Jaclyn does not think they will be going out anywhere tonight.
"We're not going to let this get the better of us"
Gerwyn is determined, “We’re not going to let a DIY disaster get the better of us, are we?”
"We haven't had a good catch-up for ages"
Outside the café, Kelly is writing today’s special on the board when Iolo comes out of number 7;  “It feels like we haven’t had good catch-up for ages,” says Kelly, and he regrets that he has not been there for her with everything that has happened.
"January is a really boring month"
“We’ll have plenty of time to catch up now, because January is a really boring month, isn’t it?” she groans.
"Let's have a cup of tea"
Siôn is coming along the street, and will treat Iolo to a cup of tea in the café.
Gwen is busy, taking orders
It is quite busy in there, and Gwen is hard at work;  Kelly feels uneasy at seeing Siôn,
"How is Auntie Anita?"
and asks how Anita is.   Siôn relates that she is looking after Greta today.
"Tyler has a supportive family"
Iolo admits that he is still worried about Tyler, and his father points out he has a supportive family;  at that moment one of them is standing behind Siôn.
"You can't stop Tyler seeing Greta!"
Dani advises Iolo, “You can’t stop Tyler seeing Greta – he’s got rights!” and he stresses that he did not mean to hurt Tyler,
"He just wouldn't leave the house, Dani"
but he just would not leave the house.
"We were trying to have a quiet cup of tea"
Siôn interrupts to say that he and Iolo were trying to have a quiet cup of tea, and that Dani should continue her conversation another time.
She takes offence at this;  “I’m not going anywhere –
"You're no more important than anyone else!"
“you’re no more important than anyone else!”
"How about a cup of tea upstairs, Dani?"
Kelly sucessfully defuses the situation by suggesting that she and Dani should go upstairs for a break, leaving Gwen in charge.
Diane peels potatoes
As Diane peels potatoes, Dai wants to know why all the fuss about dinner;
"It's been a year now, Dai"
“It’s been a year now, Dai,” she replies, “How do you feel now?”   He replies that he feels happy that she is by his side,
"Are you making Dauphinoise potates?"
and wonders if she is going to make Dauphinoise potatoes tonight, because he loves them.
Caught in the act of biscuit consumption
Sitting down, he helps himself to a biscuit, but Diane snarls at him, “Hey, if you eat any more of those, I’ll stick one where the sun doesn’t shine!”
"He was very pleased to see his Mam"
Jason returns alone, and reports that Ifan was very pleased to see his mother;  “He had a huge smile on his face.”
"Mam, how many steaks did you get?"
Then he continues with a plaintive note in his voice, “Mam, how many steaks did you get for tonight?”   Diane was under the impression he was going out, and points out that tonight was supposed to be a time for her and Dai.
"So you're saying there's no room at the inn?"
“So you’re saying that there’s no room at the inn?” he realises, and Dai backs that up, telling Diane that it will do Jason good to go out;  the place has been like a crèche all week.
"A quiet night in for Mam-gu and Tad-cu"
Diane envisages a quiet night for Mam-gu and Tad-cu,
Dai snaffles another biscuit
while Dai surreptitiously takes another biscuit.
Kelly uses a proper teapot
Kelly pours tea from the pot, as she says to Dani,
"I respect you for sticking with your family"
“So, for what it’s worth, I respect you for sticking with your family – because not every family does that!”   Then she adds a very tiny amount of milk to her tea.
"Look, we haven't seen eye to eye recently"
“Look, I know we haven’t seen eye to eye recently,” Dani begins, “About Paul being adopted – but I don’t want that to come between us any more.   I hate quarrelling with you.
"We're having a New Year's Eve party in the Deri"
“Everyone has to make big decisions in life, don’t they?   What are you doing tonight?   We’re having a New Year’s Eve party in the Deri –
Kelly looks at the details . . .
“I’m inventing cocktails.”
. . . but is not really in the mood for celebrating
Kelly is not really in the mood for celebrating this year, and Dani understands that, but says if she changes her mind, they will be pleased to see her.
Kelly remarks that the tea is loose leaf – which she insists makes a massive difference;  she adds, dismissively, “Siôn got a teabag!”
"The party starts at eight"
In the Deri, Guto says that the party starts at eight o’clock, and wonders if Mathew will be there;  Tesni shows little interest, but their mother demands whether there will be drugs at the party.
"We're not stupid enough to take drugs, Mam"
“Even if there are drugs, we’re not stupid enough to take them!” Guto replies,
"Drugs ruin lives!"
and Jaclyn is glad, asserting that drugs ruin lives.
"Sitting there, after everything he's done!"
Then Gerwyn notices Tyler at the bar;  “He’s got a cheek, sitting there after everything he’s done!”
"Iolo still respects you, I can see that"
Dani reports to Tyler that she had a word with Iolo;  “He still respects you, I can see that – perhaps you should go over there to talk to Iolo about Greta –
He thinks he might to to see Iolo again
“just you and him.”
Dylan is back
Dylan comes into the Deri and says that Sara put the photos online when they were at the airport.   Jaclyn is reluctant to speak to him,
"She's still angry for leaving the bath running"
and Gerwyn points out that she is still angry with herself for leaving the bath running.   Dylan maintains that it is easily fixed, and has to go now, as Sara is expecting a bottle of champagne to finish off the holiday.
Brenda remarks that he must have some time for his family,
They all request expensive drinks . . .
and when he asks what they would like to drink, there are various answers, including brandy and champagne.
. . . all, that is, except Jaclyn
Jaclyn looks extremely disinterested.
Kelly sits alone . . .
Kelly sits alone, watching the television, but then turns it off,
. . . but then decides she will go out
grabs the leaflet about the New Year’s Eve party and leaves the flat.
"Are you wearing that for a bet?"
Dai is amused by Jason’s colourful shirt;  “Are you wearing that for a bet?” he demands, and Jason is angered by his attitude, pointing out that he is hardly fashionable himself.
"Look here, Pharaoh – there's nothing wrong with the way I dress!"
“Look here, Pharaoh!   There’s nothing wrong with the way I dress!” says Dai, and Jason protests that he does not even want to go out.
"I could have a tin of tuna"
“Are you sure I can’t stay in and have dinner with you?” he pleads, “I could have a tin of tuna instead of steak.”
"No chance – now get going!"
Dai informs him that there is no chance, aand advises him to get going.   Dai reckons that Jason is getting old before his time, and a couple of pints will do him good.
"I want you back by eight at the latest!"
“Talking of old men, I want you back by eight at the latest!” orders Diane,
"Right – you're the boss, Diane!"
but he replies that it is a bit early, nevertheless accepting that she is the boss.
Dylan supplies the drinks
Dylan brings over the drinks, but Jaclyn refuses hers, so Tesni takes advantage of the situation;
"I'll have it, if it's going spare!"
“I’ll have it, if it’s going spare.”
"The party's at Maes-y-Deri now"
Guto has been informed that the venue for the party has been moved to Maes-y-Deri.
"Refusing a drink in front of everyone!"
Dylan mutters to Jaclyn, “Not the cleverest thing you’ve done – refusing a drink in front of everyone!”   She just demands to be left alone, so he turns his attentions to Jason;
Tyler starts baiting Jason
“The weather was fantastic in Thailand – it was sunny every day,” he says, “Sara burns easily, doesn’t she?
"Thanks for babysitting Ifan for us"
“Thanks for babysitting Ifan for us.”
Jason, who up until now has said nothing,
"I was looking after my son, not babysitting!"
replies, “I was looking after my son, not babysitting!”   Kelly has just arrived and witnessed this altercation;
"Come on, Jason – lets have a cocktail!"
she invites Jason to have a cocktail, as they are ‘two for one’, and Jason is pleased to get away from Dylan.
"You're looking 'hot', Kelly"   (Yes, indeed!)
Behind the bar, Dani remarks that Kelly is looking ‘hot’ and asks what they want;
"You can't pronounce it, can you?"
Jason selects the cocktail at the top of the list, but cannot pronounce the name.
"What are you doing here, Siôn?"
Tyler arrives at number 7 again (raising the question of where he obtained the key) and finds Siôn there, as Iolo had asked him to check that everything was turned off.
"Iolo's gone away for a few nights with Greta"
“He’s gone away for a few nights with Greta,” Siôn tells Tyler, but will not reveal where they have gone.
Tyler insists that he has a right to know,
"They've gone on holiday – that's all you need to know"
but is told, “They’ve gone on a little holiday – that’s all you need to know.”
"I was never good enough for your family!"
Tyler can see that he is enjoying this;  “I was never good enough for your family,” he snarls, and walks out of the house again.
"I'm not sure whether I like the look of this"
Jason is not sure whether he likes the look of his cocktail;  “What’s not to like about ‘Cwmderi Crush’?” she asks, and he proposes a toast to not talking about anything too sad or heavy tonight.
Dai wants three whiskies
Then Dai appears at the bar and orders three whiskies;
"I thought you were going to the Golf Club"
Jason was under the impression he was going to the Golf Club.
"I'm a free man for the next half hour – keep it shut, Jason!"
“I’m a free man for the next half hour – so keep it shut!” growls Dai.
"You're very slow to forgive Dylan"
Gerwyn complains that Jaclyn is very slow in forgiving Dylan, and she once again explains that he sacked her.   Gerwyn can see through this;  “I know you, Jac, he’s done something worse than that.
"For the last time, what's going on?"
“So, for the last time, what’s going on?   Or I’m going over there to talk to him myself.
She invents an affair behind Sara's back
She now comes up with the story that he is seeing another woman behind Sara’s back, and he wants her to keep quiet about it.
"We're off to the party now"
Guto and Tesni are off to the party, and their mother repeats her warning about drugs.   Jaclyn is eager to go home;  “You know how much I hate New Year’s Eve, Ger – we could get a takeaway.”   This sounds tempting to Brenda, who invites Dylan to join them,
"Sara must be waiting for her champagne!"
but Jaclyn insists that he has to get back to Sara, who is probably waiting for her champagne.
"There's no hope – I might as well face it!"
At the bar, Tyler asks Dani for a double whisky, and reveals that Iolo has taken Greta away;  “There’s no hope, and I may as well face it!”
The whisky goes straight down the hatch
he downs the whisky in one gulp and leaves.
"Not much fun in here tonight, is it?"
Jason comments that it is not a lot of fun in the Deri tonight,
"I've got a bottle of vodka in the flat"
but Kelly suggests, “I’ve got a bottle of vodka in the flat.”   Jason quickly drains his glass.
The table is laid . . .
At Bryntirion, the meal is almost ready,
. . . and the Dauphinoise potatoes are cooked perfectly . . .
and Diane takes the food out of the oven;  then there is the sound of a text message.
. . . but then there is a problem
“I’m in the Deri now – is there any chance of a lift home?” asks Dai.
She shouts, “Eight o’clock we said, Mr Ashurst!” and angrily takes off her apron.
Jason puts on some music
In the café flat, Jason puts on some music and Kelly brings him a drink;
"You haven't gone to too much trouble with the decorations, Kelly"
“You haven’t gone to too much trouble with the decorations this year, Kelly,” he observes, but she replies she saw no point on leaving them up.
"I miss having Auntie Neet around"
“I miss her – Auntie Neet – I miss having her around,” Kelly groans,
"I haven't got anyone who cares"
“I haven’t got anyone any more – no-one that cares, anyway!   And do you know what?
"Everyone's happy except for me"
“Everywhere I look, everybody’s happy – everyone apart from me.”
"Do you see this bloke smiling?"
Jason reminds her that he is in a similar position;  “Do you see this bloke smiling? When did you last see me laugh?   The bloke who’s lost everything.   The bloke who knows that his wife is back in the village somewhere tonight – in the arms of another man.
"I don't blame Sara"
“I don’t blame Sara –all she’s done is leave the bloke who’s made a complete mess of things, so there we are.”
"Don't be so hard on yourself – you're a top bloke!"
Kelly tells him not to be too hard on himself;  “You’re a top bloke!   You’re here, keeping me company – and you know what?
"I don't feel lonely for the first time since – I don't know"
“I don’t feel lonely, for the first time since – I don’t know.   So I think that’s a sign of a top bloke!   Don’t you think?”
"You deserve to be happy, Kelly – you're a 'top chick'!"
“You deserve to be happy, Kelly – everyone loves you – you’re a top . . . chick!   Sorry, I don’t know why I said that,”
Kelly says that is a nice compliment
but Kelly is very amused and thinks that it is nice.
Jason kisses Kelly
He walks forward and kisses her, then asks, “Was that nice?
"Do you want to do it again?"
“Do you want to do it again?”
It is quite clear that she does want to
She evidently does – and they do so.
Jaclyn heads out for more poppadoms
Jaclyn leaves the house, as she is returning to get more poppadoms;
She has another argument with Dylan
Dylan comes running up the street and tells her, “I know you’re angry, but you have to be more careful!   Gerwyn’s going to start asking questions.”   She points out that he is her husband, and she does not want to hide things from him.
"For Gerwyn, is it?"
She goes into Cwm Delhi and asks for a few more poppadoms, while Dylan waits outside;  “For Gerwyn, is it?” asks the proprietor.
"Oh – here comes trouble!"
When Diane arrives at the Deri, she finds Dai laughing with a few of his mates;
"We said eight o'clock!  Now hurry up!"
“Eight o’clock we said, didn’t we?   Now hurry up!” she growls at him.   He replies that it is New Year’s Eve, and invites her to have a drink with them, but she stresses that the Dauphinoise is out of the oven and getting cold.
"Find your own way home, then!"
As he will not move, she tells him to find his own way home, and storms out;
"Dog-house, boys, dog-house!"
“Dog house, boys, dog house!” Dai comments.
"How many more times?   Leave me alone!"
When Jaclyn emerges from Cwm Delhi, Dylan is ready to continue his onslaught;  “How many more times do I have to tell you?   Leave me alone!” she exclaims,
"I'm worried about you, Jac"
but he says that he worries about her, and fears that she is not coping.
She reminds him that they hid someone’s body,
Jason becomes threatening
but he grabs her and tells her to keep her voice down.   “We’ve done something terrible!” she goes on, “Can you live with that?   I’m going to the police tomorrow!:”
"Want to ruin your children's lives?"
“And what?   Ruin your children’s lives?” he rages;  she pushes him away,
She escapes, into the path of Diane's car . . .
and hurries back across the road, right into the path of Diane, who is angrily driving back to Bryntirion.
. . . and rebounds on to the road
Jaclyn is flung on to the bonnet of the car, and then falls to the road,
Gwyneth is horrified by the scene unfolding before her
watched by Gwyneth who happens to be nearby.
"Jacs?"
Dylan shouts, “Jacs?”
But there is no response from the inert Jaclyn
and we see Jaclyn lying motionless in the road.
