The rescue is being streamed live on television
In the hospital, Angela is watching the live television pictures, and we hear, “We are with Aled Rees, who is leading the rescue team.”
"We're trying to find a way into the mine"
He informs viewers that they could not get through the main entrance because it was blocked, and are at present trying to find way in to rescue the people trapped inside.   He is asked how confident he is that he will be able to get them out.
“We’re doing all we can – that’s all I can say at the moment,” he answers.
"I'll let you know when they say anything"
Angela has a phone call from Rhys; she says that she does not have any more information about his father, and will phone when she hears something.
"There are eight people trapped somewhere in the mine"
The television presenter continues, “All we know is that there are eight people somewhere in the mine, but the emergency services don’t know which part of the mine – or if they’re still alive.”
"Where's Mark – he said he was coming to help?"
Rushing past her is Debbie, who demands where Mark is.
Siôn is at the scene by this time, and Debbie says that Mark was staying to help, but that was hours ago.
"I won't let you be the ninth!"
She asks the rescue team leader, but he warns her to stand back, and when she tries to get inside the mine, he informs her, “Eight people are trapped already – I won’t let you be the ninth!
"If Mr Jones is down there, we'll find him"
“If Mr Jones is down there, we’ll find him.”
Gwyneth continues banging on the pipe
Gwyneth is still banging on the pipe, but of course there is no reply;  “We haven’t heard anything for ages,” she groans.
"I'm going to see a counsellor"
Dani says, “I’ve decided – if we get out of here – that I’m going to see a counsellor.   I haven’t dealt with what happened last year at all – what Gethin did.
"I miss Sheryl"
“I miss Sheryl – every time I pass the salon, it is like a stab to my stomach.”
"I think about her every time I walk down those stairs"
Gwyneth sits down and confesses, “I think about her every time I walk down those stairs.”   Dani is sure that being in the salon must give her some comfort, knowing that Sheryl wanted her to carry on with the business.
"I changed the will"
Gwyneth actually admits, “Sheryl left the salon to you – not me.   I changed the will.”   Dani finds this very hard to believe, but Gwyneth sobs, “No-one in the village could stand me – I wanted to prove that somebody liked me!”
"You're serious, aren't you?"
“You’re serious, aren’t you?” Dani growls,
Dani find it quite hilarious
and she laughs uproariously,
"You do know it's your fault people hate you?"
much to Gwyneth’s agitation;  “You do know that it’s your fault people hate you, don’t you?”
Gwyneth is aware of that, but maintains she had nowhere to turn;
"You don't understand – you have everything!"
“You don’t understand – you have everything!”
"Yes – and I worked for it!"
Dani snarls that everything she has is through hard work and a lot of effort – and not through cheating people and telling lies.
Gwyneth wants to turn over a new leaf
“That’s why I’m telling you – because I want to stop,” insists Gwyneth,
"I'm going to tell everyone what you've done!"
but Dani promises that if they get out of this, she is going to tell everyone what Gwyneth has done.
Gwyneth does not look well
There is another distant rumbling sound, and Gwyneth stands up, looking uncomfortable.
"I must save the phone battery, Dai"
Jim warns Dai that the battery on his phone will not last for long, and he is going to turn it off in case they need a light later.   “I can’t sit in the dark!” Dai panics, but he is encouraged not to panic, and just breathe.
"We're going to play the alphabet game"
“We’re going to play a game,” Jim suggests, “The alphabet game – we pick a subject, and then go through the alphabet.   Let’s start with animals – A for Aardvark, come on, an animal starting with B.”
"How old do you think I am?"
“How old do you think I am?” Dai demands, but is told it will help to keep him calm,
"Right, I'm turning it off"
and the phone light is turned off.
“Right – an animal starting with B.”   Dai comes up with Bear, Teddy Bear, and the game continues.
"What if the weight of water collapses the roof?"
Gaynor informs Ed that there is more water coming in;  “What if the weight of water collapses the roof on top of us?   I’m so cold!”
Ed puts his jacket around her
He takes off his jacket and gives it to her.   “Why isn’t anyone coming to get us, Ed?” she pleads, but he does not answer.
"There aren't any animals beginning with CH"
Dai has come across a problem;  “There aren’t any animals beginning with CH, are there?”   [in the Welsh alphabet, the letter CH comes after C and before D]
"How about 'chicken'?"
and Jim suggests (the English) chicken.   Then there is the sound of falling rocks, and Dai urges him to turn on the torch on his phone.
Iolo's face appears
They see that it is Iolo, who has been trying to find a way out;  he confirms that Tyler is with him, but does not know where the others are.   “Jim, help me clear this, will you?”
"That's not going to help, is it?"
but Dai complains that it will not help.
"It's better than listening to you moaning!"
“It’s better than listening to you moaning!” replies Jim, and they begin to clear the rocks.
Outside, Mark comes staggering towards them and announces that there is another way in;  the paramedics are called to attend to him,
Mark has regained consciousness and walked back
and Debbie is overjoyed to see him.
"There's one of the old shafts"
Mark tells them, “There’s one of the old shafts, but it’s blocked – you can get into it down there.   There’s someone in there – I don’t know who, but I could hear them.”   The rescue team make their way in the direction indicated.
The villagers wait anxiously
The rest of villagers stand silently, awaiting news.
"The hero is local postman, Mark Jones"
Angela is dozing off at the hospital, while the commentary on the television continues;  “Despite the efforts of the emergency services, the hero is local postman, Mark Jones, who has discovered an old shaft.   It appears they can get into the mine that way.”
Angela looks at the video she surreptitiously captured . . .
Angela looks at the video she has captured on her phone, then rings to advises Rhys that there is still no news;  she asks if Esther is all right.
. . . then advises Rhys that there is no fiuther news
“Listen, I know that you’re worried, Rhys, but I’ll phone once I hear something, honest.”
"You can see Mr Llywelyn now"
Then she is glad to be informed that Hywel is awake, and she can see him.
"Please, Dani, don't tell anyone!'
Gwyneth begs Dani not to tell anyone, and maintains she will sort it, and do what Sheryl wanted.   “And exactly how are you going to do that?” Dani demands.
"I'll say there was another will"
Gwyneth intends to say that there was another will, and Dani again laughs;  “You can’t help it, can you?
"Plotting until the very end – the same old Gwyneth!"
“Plotting until the very end – the same old Gwyneth – what’s wrong with you?”
"I feel ill, Dani!"
She gasps for air, and says that she does not feel well, but Dani does not believe it;
"You don't fool me with this act for one moment!"
“You don’t fool me with this act for one moment!   You’re going to prison for what you did!”
Again there is a rumbling and creaking sound, as rocks are falling, close to where they are.
Iolo hears the noise
This is also heard by Iolo, and Dai is becoming panic-stricken again;
"The place is going to collapse again!"
“The place is moving, boys – it’s going to collapse again!” he predicts.
Tyler tells him that he is wrong, as he can hear the sound of a machine, and Jim is jubilant;  “They’re going to get us out!”
It is a great weight off Dai's mind
and Dai hugs him with the excitement.
"There was an accident at Pwll Bach – do you remember?"
Angela is at Hywel’s bedside, and tells him that he is in hospital;  “There was an accident at Pwll Bach – do you remember?”
"What's wrong with my eye?"
He wants to know what is wrong with his eye, and she tells him he has a fracture in the orbit of the eye;  “But it’s not going to affect your sight,” she reassures him.
“What about Jim and Dai?” he asks,
"They've found a way into the mine"
and she says that the emergency services have found a way into the mine, but she does not know any more.
"Esther and Rhys will come and see you tomorrow"
She puts his mind at rest that Esther is at home with Rhys, and that they will come and see him tomorrow.
She cannot stop looking at the video . . .
Again she takes out her phone, and revisits the short video recording of Ed and Gaynor;
. . . and plans how to use it
she smiles malevolently.
Jim is reunited with Eileen
At Pwll Bach, the trapped people are being brought individually to the surface, the first being Jim, and Eileen is so relieved to see him.   He tells her that everything is all right,
"Dai will be out shortly"
and assures Diane that Dai will be brought out shortly.
He informs Garry that he has not seen Dani, as they were in different tunnels.
"Iolo is following me"
Tyler is the next one out, and informs Siôn that Iolo is following him;  “I dislocated my shoulder, but Iolo put it back in – my hero!”
Garry is becoming increasingly anxious
Garry is becoming increasingly anxious, as, underground,
The rescuers have made an escape route
the rescuers have reached Dani and Gwyneth;
"I'm so sorry, Dani!"
once again, Gwyneth stresses how sorry she is, but Dani is unwilling to listen to her,
Dani just wants to get out of there
and makes her way towards safety.
Gwyneth is seized by a sudden pain and collapses to the floor of the tunnel;  she is finding it difficult to breathe.
Dani is so glad to see Iolo
Dani is greeted warmly by Iolo, who assures her that Tyler is already out, and asks how she is;  she replies, “I’ve been better – Gwyneth is on her way.”
"Right, who is next?"
Gaynor is the next one to be hoisted to the surface, while Dai goes back down the passage
Gwyneth lies, gasping, on the ground
and finds that Gwyneth is lying on the ground, gasping.
"Dai, go and fetch . . ."
“Dai,” she croaks, “Go and fetch . . .” as she struggles for breath;
But he leaves her to her fate
he turns and hurries back to the others.
Iolo is greeted by his father
Above ground, Siôn is very pleased to see Iolo, and confirms that Greta is at home with Anita.
"Dani's down there, but she's OK!"
Then Iolo sees Garry, and assures him, “Dani’s OK – she’s down there, but she’s OK!”   Garry is almost in tears.
At last, Ed has emerged
Ed is the next one out, and a frantic Kelly rushes to him;  “I’ve never been so happy to see anyone!” he exclaims.
"I couldn't have coped without you!"
“I couldn’t have coped without you!” she squeals, “So, life being potentially short, not a rehearsal, and all that,” she adds,
"Will you marry me?"
takes a deep breath, and sinks to her knees.   Looking up into his eyes, she says, “Will you marry me?”
Ed looks across at Gaynor
He turns to look at Gaynor,
"Of course I will!"
then answers, “Of course I will –
She is ecstatic to hear his reply
“come here!” and they embrace.
"Never do that again!"
Dani walks silently into the arms of Garry, and he warns her never to do that again.   Diane rushes forward as Dai comes out;
"Why were you the last one out?"
“Jim said you were right behind him – why were you the last one out?”
Dai wears a haunted look
He is wearing a haunted look, and Diane fears that he is not all right.
"Where's your friend, Gwyneth Jones?"
The rescue leader asks Dani where her friend, Gwyneth Jones, is, and she replies that she thought Gwyneth was following her;
"She said she felt ill – I thought it was a joke!"
“She said she felt ill – I thought it was a joke,”
"We may have a problem"
and the leader reports on his radio that they might have a problem.
Gwyneth is lying, motionless . . .
The rescuers return to the mine, calling Gwyneth’s name, and discover, “She’s not breathing!”
. . . and the team begin resuscitation
They begin resuscitation, as, on the surface, Dani feels guilty, and so does Dai.
They call for a stretcher
The rescue leader calls for a stretcher, and says they will get her out now;  in answer to Dani’s question,
"She's had a cardiac arrest"
he explains, “She’s had a cardiac arrest, and we don’t know if she is alive.”
"To die like that in a coal mine on her own . . ."
Diane comments, “I know I don’t like the woman, but to die like that in a coal mine on her own . . .”
