Garry goes over to see Britt
Next morning, Garry walks across to the chippy flat, looking up at the windows,
He is wondering what he can do
and then stops by the door, wondering what he is going to do.
He finds Britt asleep on the sofa
He lets himself in and finds Britt asleep on the sofa, with the room in a state of disarray;
The picture has been slashed
he finds that the picture on the wall which she found so comforting has now been slashed.
"How many of these have you taken?"
He has difficulty rousing her, and sees a bottle of tablets nearby;  “How many of these have you taken?” he demands.   She drowsily replies that she has had only one, because she could not sleep.
"Look at you – and this place"
“Look at you – and this place,” he says, and throws opens the curtains to let in some light;  “I’m going to make you a coffee – a strong one!”
Garry is in a state of despair
then he stands in the kitchen in a state of total despair.
Aaron returns to the Deri after school and tells Dani that it was fine;
"I bet you're starving, Aaron"
“I bet you’re starving – I was always starving after the last lesson,” she says, but he replies that he is not hungry.
"Has Garry spoken with Mam yet?"
“Has Garry spoken with Mam yet?” he asks, and she reports that he is over there now;
"How about a ham and cheese toastie?"
she promises he will sort everything out.   After further encouragement, he agrees he will have something to eat, and Dani will make him a ham and cheese toastie, assuring him that everything will be OK.
"I haven't stopped all day, Kel!"
Iolo arrives in the café, complaining that he has not stopped all day, and just wants five minutes before picking up Greta.
The extortioner sends a reminder to Ed
Ed comes downstairs, looking at his phone, which bears the message, “Remember – pay day tomorrow!”
"Can you look after the café later?"
and Kelly asks him to look after the café later, as she needs to go to the bank.
He appears very preoccupied, but assures her that he is all right,
She thinks that he is not, in fact, all right
which she seems to doubt.
"I thought you had a staff meeting"
Tyler arrives, although Iolo thought he had a staff meeting;  “And I thought you were picking up Greta,” is the reply.
Kelly will get his cup of coffee, and addresses him as, “Your majesty!”
"Pity that Iolo is related to that William Williams bloke"
She says, “It’s a pity Iolo is related to that William Williams bloke – I didn’t have a clue about the Blue Books – I thought they were something really dodgy!”
"You said you would keep it quiet"
Iolo complains to Tyler that he said he would keep it quiet, but Kelly adds, “Don’t worry – everyone knows not to tell Siôn.”
"I'm going to tell Dad before someone else does!"
“Everyone?” exclaims Iolo, “So the whole village knows?   Thanks, Ty!   I’m going to pick up Greta – and tell Dad before he finds out from someone else!”
"You're definitely in the bad books!"
Kelly quips to Tyler, “I don’t know about the Blue Books, but you’re definitely in the bad books!   Plus, you have to pay for his coffee!”
No point in wasting a good coffee
After he has done so, she drinks it.
"Aaron's missing his mother"
Garry brings a cup of coffee to Britt, who is by this time sitting up;  she asks how Aaron is, and is told that he is missing his mother.   “Of course he is safe,” Garry goes on,
"I want you to stay with us in the Deri"
“I want you to stay with us in the Deri, until you feel better – yes, it could take a long time, I realise that, and before you ask, Dani is fine with it.”
"What happened yesterday, Garry?"
She is not keen on this arrangement, and he appreciates that, but it is for the best;  she asks him, “What happened yesterday, Gar?” and he answers that she was tired, after all the stress she has been under with this Neville business.
"It's no wonder you overreacted"
“It’s no wonder you overreacted – you’ve been so strong over the years, Britt – perhaps things have just caught up with you.   Perhaps you haven’t dealt with some things.”
"Teg's death, Brandon, Chester leaving"
She ponders this for a moment, as he continues, “Teg’s death, Brandon, Chester leaving – it’s been one thing after another.”
"Mam always said she was going to get us out"
“You do remember why we had to go into a children’s home, don’t you?” Britt asks him, “Do you remember Mam visiting us there?   She always said she was going to get us out – that she would break in – in the middle of the night.”
This brings tears to Garry's eyes
Garry is in tears at this memory, as Britt repeats, “Do you remember how she would say that?
"She wasn't all there, was she?"
“She wasn’t all there, was she?   She lived in la la land, poor dab!”
"I'm like her, aren't I?"
Then, after a pause, she goes on, “I’m like her, aren’t I?”
"Greta is fast asleep"
Siôn is reading a book, ‘Miners against Fascism’, when Iolo comes downstairs and reports that Greta is fast asleep;  “We went to the park and she loved it – perhaps I should have put her down earlier,” says Siôn, but Iolo has something to tell his father.
"You know we looked into our ancestry?"
“You know that Tyler and I have looked into our ancestry – something unexpected popped up about our family.”   Siôn hopes that they are related to Owain Glyndwr, but Iolo continues, “He’s well-known, in a way – William Williams.”
"William Williams, Pantycelyn . . ."
Siôn immediately assumes it is the one from Pantycelyn, the famous hymn-writer, and quotes from one of his hymns,
". . . one of Wales' best ever poets!"
“Today the well was opened,
Shining like the purest crystal,
It fills and flows over the land of Salem.
“He isn’t just a hymn writer, but one of Wales’ best ever poets!”
"Not that William Williams – the MP!"
“Dad, not that William Williams – the MP!” Iolo announces, and Siôn cannot believe that it is the Blue Books bloke.
"There must be some mistake!"
“Oh no, there must be some mistake!” rages Siôn,
"We must keep this quiet!"
“We have to keep this quiet!   Nobody else must know!”
"Someone opened his mouth!"
Iolo agrees with this, but points out that unfortunately, someone has opened his mouth;  that ‘someone’ then walks in, and apologises profusely.   Siôn is lost for words.
"OK, I'm off to the bank with the takings"
Kelly comes downstairs, and is on her way to the bank with the takings,
"No, Kel, I'll go!"
but Ed insists that he should go instead;  she was intending to go round the shops as well, but he is adamant that she can do that on Sunday.
"I'll take you shopping on Sunday!"
“Do you know what?   I’ll come with you – Swansea or Cardiff if you want!   You’ll have more time in the shops then.”
She is incredulous that he is volunteering to go round the shops;  “Are you all right?   You might have a virus too!”   He points out that she is not 100%, so he will go instead,
She hands over the money . . .
and takes the bag of money from her.   Well, it’s less hassle for me I suppose –
. . . little dreaming what he intends to do
“how about Bristol or Bath?   Are they too far, do you think?”   He tells her not push her luck.
That café must be a highly profitable concern
When he emerges from the back door of the café, he looks inside the bag at the thick wad of money, and appears relieved.
A barrow-load of bricks has been left lying around
Then he notices what is in front of him – a wheelbarrow containing bricks.
Ed has to make this look convincing . . .
He puts the bag of money inide a wheelie-bin, takes off his jacket
. . . so rips some buttons from his jacket
and rips several buttons from it.
He selects a suitable half-brick . . .
Checking to make sure no one is around, he selects a brickbat, and after summoning up his courage, he smashes himself in the head with it,
. . . and is in pain from his self-inflicted injury
understandably crying out with pain.
"The money – someone's stolen it!"
Kelly hears his cries and rushes out;  “The money – someone’s stolen it!” he wails,
Kelly is absolutely horrified
and she looks with horror along the street.
"I sometimes feel like I can't switch off!"
Britt tells Garry, “I sometimes feel like I can’t switch off – then I feel like I can’t switch on.   Do you know what I mean?   Sometimes I want to hit my head against the wall, to stop this for a second!   The next thing, I want someone to shake me, wake me up!
"I never used to be like this"
“I never used to be like this, did I, Gar?
"Perhaps Colin's right – I should see a doctor"
“Hey, perhaps Colin’s right, you know – I should go and see the doctor.”
All this time Garry has made no comment, and Britt goes on, “Do you think if we’d stayed with Mam, she would have gone to see someone?”
"I don't want to lose Aaron!"
He agrees that it is possible, but she sobs, “I don’t want to lose Aaron!”
“If you come to the Deri, you won’t,” he reassures her, and she thinks about it.
"I'm being as gentle as I can"
Up in the café flat, Kelly is trying to clean up Ed’s injury;  “I’m sorry – I’m being as gentle as I can, I promise,” she tells him,
"We should go to A&E"
“This cut looks really nasty – we should go to A&E.”   He says that is not necessary, but she worries that he is suffering from concussion.
"I'm more angry with myself than anything!"
“I’m more angry with myself than anything, for letting it happen,” he says, “I was counting the money on the street.”   Kelly maintains that it takes real guts to mug someone in the middle of the village in broad daylight.
"It all happened so fast"
“He knew what he was doing,” Ed continues, “By the time I realised what was happening, it was too late.   It happened so fast – all I know is that he was about the same size as me, and was wearing some kind of balaclava.”
"He almost gave Eileen a heart attack!"
As intended, this puts the suspicion into Kelly’s mind that it was the same person who burgled Penrhewl;  “And almost gave Eileen a heart attack!”   He pretends that he has not thought of that possibility.
"They'll call me 'Filthy Traitor' from now on!"
Siôn is convinced that he will be a figure of fun from now on, and will be called, “Dic Siôn Dafydd,” (loosely translated as ‘Filthy Traitor’).
"Half the village have never heard of the Blue Books"
Tyler maintains that half the village have not heard of the Treachery of the Blue Books or William Williams.
“Maybe not, but I know, and I will have to live with the shame for the rest of my life!” Siôn groans.   Iolo is of the opinion that William Williams would turn in his grave if he knew how much of a nationalist Siôn is.
"At least, it will not affect Greta"
Siôn points out that at least it will not affect Greta, but Tyler appears to be about to reveal something else, so Iolo considers it high time that they went home,
"Oh yes, I forgot about that tutoring"
alleging that he has some private tutoring after dinner.
Siôn goes to get the rest of Greta’s stuff from upstairs, and Tyler wonders what happened to the policy of being honest;
"Let him get over the shock first!"
“Let him get over the shock of being related to William Williams first,” Iolo advises, “He’ll have a heart attack if he finds out Greta is related to the Royal Family!”
"Did you like that?"
Aaron has enjoyed his toastie, and is watching television;
"Why's Garry taking so long?"
he wonders why Garry is taking so long, but Dani says they have a lot to discuss.   “Dani, do you want to watch the telly with me?” he asks, and she sits down on the sofa beside him, sure that Dan will be OK in the bar for a while.
"If it's rubbish, I'll change the channel!"
However, she warns him that if the program is rubbish, she will be changing the channel.
Garry looks at a historic photo
Garry is looking at photos of himself, Britt and Brandon in their younger days;  Britt has tidied herself up,
"Now you look like the Britt I know"
and Garry says she is now recognisable as the Britt he knows.
They leave for the Deri
She says that she is ready, so they leave the flat.
Kelly closes the café
Kelly closes the café, and Ed is surprised it is that time already;  he must have fallen asleep.
"I was going to check on you, before the cops arrive"
“I was going to check on you, before the cops arrive,” she says,
"What?   You've involved the police?"
and he is horrified that the police are being involved.   “We have to report it, especially after what happened at Penrhewl,” she explains.
“You should have checked with me first!” he shouts,
"I'm a bit allergic to the police – after Sioned"
and she wonders why he is behaving like this;  he answers, “I’m a bit allergic to the police after everything with Sioned.”
She does not appreciate him snapping at her;  “You’re making a habit of it, and I don’t like it.”
"My head's like a merry-go-round!"
Then she is seized by a sudden stomach pain, and her head is spinning like a merry-go-round.   Ed encourages her to take deep breaths, but she insists that she is fine;  “It may be shock, or this virus – I don’t know.”
He admits that he does not feel too special either;
Ed wants to go out for some fresh air . . .
“Do you mind if I go out the back to get some fresh air before the police arrive?”
. . . or to make sure the bin has not been emptied
Once outside, he opens the bin and retrieves the bag of money, with a sigh of relief,
"I'll come and get them tomorrow"
then gets out his phone and contacts Tudor.   “Ed Charles here again – listen, the rings, have you still got them?   I’ve got the cash – I’ll come and get them tomorrow morning.”
He now also has the balance of the £10,000
Then he sends a text to Angela, “No problem.   I’ve got the cash,” and takes a deep breath.
"Could have been worse, I suppose"
Dani is not very impressed by the television programme, but says that it could have been worse;
"You might be too old to understand it"
Aaron ventures the opinion, “I just think you might be too old to understand it.   Garry’s been gone a long time.”   At that moment, footsteps can be heard coming up the stairs,
Britt arrives
then Aaron’s mother walks in and greets him.
“Sorry, Aaron – for everything,” she says,
"Are you going to be OK, Mam?"
and he asks if she is going to be OK.
"I'm going to do everything I can to get better"
“Yes,” she replies, “And until I am, we’re going to live here with Garry and Dani, OK?   I’m going to do everything I can to get better.”
Aaron embraces her
He hugs his mother.
