Diane writes her character reference
Diane is writing a letter of support for Colin, and Britt is sure that a letter from a councillor is bound to make a difference;
Dai is instructed to sign the petition
“Have you signed the petition?” she asks, and Dai is instructed to also sign it, which he does, grudgingly.
“Has Dai told you about our embarrassing experience last night?” Britt continues,
The revelation amazes Diane
“I walked in on him waxing his chest!”
"I told you not a word to anyone!"
He reminds her that he told her not to say a word to anyone, but she did not know that he meant Diane, and makes a hasty exit.
"Don't say you're turning into a modern man!"
Diane protests that she only wanted him to trim it;  “Don’t say that you’re turning into a modern man all of a sudden!”   He replies that it is not funny, and shows her the condition of his chest.
"You've made a real mess of things!"
“Oh, you’ve made a real mess of things!” she exclaims, “Does it hurt?”
He admits that it is killing him;
"It's like a slice of brawn!"
“It’s like a slice of brawn!   You haven’t got any bicarb, have you?”   She is insistent that he has to go to see a doctor, but he does not want to tell anyone else about it.
He is ordered to consult a doctor
“You don’t want to get an infection,” Diane instructs him, “Or we won’t be able to go to Scotland tomorrow.   Go to the surgery – now!”
"Are you going to run the race?"
DJ is in the Deri when Gwyneth comes in, and wonders if he has any ideas about a celebrity to unveil the defibrillator.   She asks if he is going to run the race,
"No, I am not!"
but he refuses;
She hands him a sponsorship form
she nevertheless hands him a sponsorship form.
Britt is now at Y Felin, badgering Siôn;  “What do you mean, you haven’t written the reference yet?”  she demands.
"There's a little bloke in there with a hammer!"
Siôn, still in his dressing gown, informs her that there is a little bloke with a hammer banging away in his head.
He continues, “And Iolo dumped Greta on me this morning, so I haven’t had the chance.   What’s the rush?   He won’t be sentenced for a while.”
"We're going to court tomorrow!"
She informs him that they are going to court tomorrow for the plea hearing.   She wants to go with the petition and the character references, so that the judge has plenty of time to read them.
As Siôn drinks his hangover remedy, she goes on, “I told Colin that everything would be ready by the time he gets home from Lampeter tonight.”
"When the tablets have kicked in!"
Siôn just wants the medication to kick in and he will start on it, then will bring it to the Deri.
"Sign this petition as well!"
She demands, “You can sign this petition as well!”
Garry goes to select what he requires
Diane is on duty at APD and directs Garry to the item he is looking for;
"She's preparing for a networking course"
then she asks Jason if he has seen Sara.   “She’s busy preparing for some networking course she wants to do – she’s going tomorrow,” he replies.
Diane protests that she cannot do that, as they are going to Scotland tomorrow;
"Who's going to drive you to Gamblers Anonymous?"
“If she’s away as well, who is going to drive you to Gamblers Anonymous?”   He maintains that he can afford to miss one meeting, but his mother insists that it is important he goes to every one.
"It's only fair I put her first for once"
“This course is important to Sara, and it is only fair that I put her first for once,” he says, just as Dai returns from the surgery.
"You could turn milk sour with a face like that!"
Jason comments, “You could turn milk sour with a face like that!” but Diane points out that he has been to the doctor;
Diane explainsabout the reaction
he had a bad reaction to chest wax.
Jason is amazed;  “You’re one of those metrosexuals now as well, are you?
"What else did you wax?"
“What else did you wax?”
Garry is taking an interest
Behind them, Garry is listening into this conversation with interest, and Dai reprimands Diane for telling everyone;  “He’s given me some cream and antihistamines!” he moans.
Garry is by now laughing at his predicament, and Diane warns Dai that he will not be able to drink at the game now, which he regards as, “Poppycock!”
"I didn't know you went to the salon, Dai!"
Garry remarks, “I didn’t know that you went to the salon, Dai!” but he makes it quite clear that he does not want to talk about it.
DJ will take one of Megan's collection bags to Bryntirion
In the café, Megan asks DJ if he will take one of her collection bags to Bryntirion, to save her the walk;  on his way out, he drops the sponsorship form,
"You're not doing it – after everything she's done to you?"
and it is picked up by Kath.   “You’ve dropped this – doing this ‘Heart Race’, are you?”   He replies that Gwyneth gave it to him.   “You’re not going to do it, are you, after everything she’s done to you?” Kath continues,
"She's only trying to improve her reputation!"
“This race is only her way of trying to improve her reputation!”
"Things are not that simple!"
Megan interrupts, “Things are not that simple – I know things have been tense between you and Gwyneth, but you have to ask yourself one thing.   What’s more important – holding a grudge against Gwyneth, or doing a good deed for the village?”
"I agree with Kath"
DJ agrees with Kath’s evaluation, but Megan is undeterred;  “Your father suffers from angina – he might need a defibrillator one day.”
"That's emotional blackmail!"
Kath describes this as emotional blackmail;  “But it’s true, isn’t it?” says Megan, as DJ leaves the café.
"Can you imagine Dai off the whisky?"
The word is quickly spreading, as Garry tells Mal and Madge, “Can you imagine Dai off the whisky at Murrayfield?
Madge and Mal find it hilarious
“Those poor Scots – their profits will be down!”
"Wouldn't be surprised if he sues Debbie!"
Then he tells Mark about it;  “Dai’s had a bad reaction to chest wax – he’s been to the doc!   I wouldn’t be surprised if he sues Debbie for negligence.”
Mark is disturbed by this
Mark hurries away in a worried state, as Garry continues laughing.
Debbie points out the steep rise in takings . . .
In the salon, Debbie is pointing out, “This week last year, Sheryl made £855.50, this year we’ve made £1,210 – thanks to me and my treatments!”
. . . which should result in a pay rise
Gwyneth concedes that she was right about these treatments for the boys;  “So in view of this increase, what about that pay rise?” Debbie enquires, and is told she can have an extra £40 a week, as long as they are still seeing the same profit.   Debbie on the other hand, thinks she is worth another £50.
Mark brings them the bad news
As they haggle, Mark comes in;  “There’s a story going round that Dai’s had a bad reaction to chest wax he got from here!   Garry says he’s going to sue!”
Siôn's very eloquent letter  (Y Felin is in Pwll Bach Road)
Britt reads the letter which Siôn has composed.   “Your Welsh is so good, Siôn,” but he replies that it is only the truth;
"He just had a moment of weakness"
Colin is a good man, a kind man, who just had a moment of weakness.
Britt is amazed by the powerful words
She says that the judge would have to have a heart of stone for these words not to affect him;  Siôn is now going home to nurse his hangover,
Megan comes into the Deri
and meets Megan in the doorway.
Britt wonders if the words she has been reading would have an effect on Megan;
"Perhaps they would persuade her"
“Perhaps they would persuade her to change her testimony.”   Garry says that he was unable persuade her, and wonders what chance Britt has.
"I'm going to read this out"
“She respects Siôn – I’m going to read this out when she comes to the bar,” Britt decides, “It might make a difference.”
"Orange juice, please, Garry"
Megan asks for an orange juice,
"Colin Evans is a man with a big heart"
and Britt begins, “Gar, do you want to hear the character reference Siôn’s written for Colin?   ‘Colin Evans is a good man.   He is a man with a big heart.   He has only made one mistake’.”   She pretends to be reduced to tears,
Megan is unmoved
but Megan seems completely unmoved.
Betty has come in for some paint
Betty has come into APD for some paint, and Dai insists that he will mix it;
"If you hadn't gone on and on, this wouldn't have happened!"
“If you hadn’t gone on and on about my body hair, this wouldn’t have happened in the first place!” he snarls at Diane.
"Oi!   What have you been telling Garry?"
Then a deputation from the salon arrives;  “Oi!   What have you been telling Garry?” Debbie demands, “He’s saying you had a bad reaction to chest wax from the salon – but you haven’t been near the place!”
"Mind your own business!"
Dai explains that he never said he had, and tells her to mind her own business when she asks what is wrong with his chest.
"It is my business if I get a bad reputation!"
Gwyneth pipes up, “It is my business if I get a bad reputation as a result!”   Diane advises him that he had better tell them, as they are bound to find out.
"He waxed his own chest"
“He waxed his own chest,” she reports,
"Why did Garry say you were going to sue the salon?"
and Mark wants to know why Garry said he was going to sue the salon.
Debbie maintains that this is revenge for the photos last week;
"You're going to tell everyone the truth!"
“You’re going to tell everyone the truth, or I will be suing you!”   The three of them turn and walk out of the shop, leaving Dai in a confused state.
"Colin stood up and admitted what he did"
Britt is continuing with her ploy;  “Honesty is a virtue and Colin Evans has been very willing to stand up and admit to what he did to Neville McRoy from the very beginning.   Many people would have tried to hide the truth, would have tried to get away with it to make life easier – but not Colin Evans.   He has been enough of a man to face his responsibility from the start.”
Jason finds those words have a personal relevance
Jason is sitting nearby and listening, as Britt goes on, “His bravery and his strength in the face of this storm is truly something to admire.”
"Very true – every word"
Garry confirms that every word of that is true, and Megan is about to leave the Deri.
“It’s had no effect on her at all!” growls Britt, “Stuff this!” and she shouts to Megan.
"Can I have a word in private?"
“Can I have a word, please, in private?”   They go into a corner,
"Do you agree with what Siôn said?"
and Britt is wondering if she agrees with what Siôn said.
"No-one has questioned that Colin is a good man"
“No-one has ever questioned the fact that Colin is a good man,” Megan replies, so Britt wants to know why she is forcing him to go to court.
"If it were not for your evidence . . ."
If it was not for her evidence, he would not have to go.
“You’re not trying to do what your brother tried to do, are you?” enquires Megan, but Britt begs her to take back her words.
"It's not the right thing to do!"
Megan is intransigent;  “Like I told Garry, its not the right thing to do.”
"And sending Colin to jail is the right thing to do?"
“And sending a good man like Colin to jail is the right thing to do?” Britt demands, “You’re supposed to be a Christian!   And I’m starting to doubt that you saw what you said you saw.   Did you see Colin hit Neville?   It’s easy to make a mistake – your eyesight is not as good as it was.”
Megan is quite adamant that her eyesight is fine, but the onslaught continues;
"Old people get confused"
“Everyone makes mistakes when they’re old – they get confused.”
Megan shows no signs of confusion, and tells Britt, “Forget it – I know exactly what I saw!”
"Colin's solicitor could make things very difficult for you!"
Britt points out that Colin’s solicitor could make things very difficult for her, but Megan reiterates,
"You should be ashamed of yourself!"
“I’ll be telling the truth – and you should be ashamed of yourself!”   She walks out of the pub, leaving Britt very angry.   She reports to Garry that she has had no success.
DJ is putting in some training
DJ runs through the alley, wearing his tracksuit;
"Don't tell me you're going to do this race?"
Kath comments, “Don’t tell me you’re going to do this race!”   He says that Megan was right – the well-being of people is more important than how he feels about Gwyneth.
"You're too soft, DJ"
Kath tells him that he is too soft.
"All right, Debbie, message received!"
In the Deri, Debbie is putting Garry straight;  “He did it to himself!” and it appears that Garry accepts this.
"Debbie has had a pay rise . . ."
When she goes to sit down with a drink, Mark tells his mother that Debbie has had a pay rise;
". . . and to think you're not even qualified!"
“And to think that you’re not even qualified!” he remarks.
An irate Gwyneth is soon on the scene
Unfortunately, Gwyneth is within earshot, and soon comes to ask him what he means;
"Which college did you train at?"
“You are qualified to do these treatments, aren’t you?   Why did Mark say you’re not?   Which college did you train at?”
"Pensarn"
Debbie replies that it was at Pensarn, but Gwyneth happens to know that they do not do beauty therapy at Pensarn.
"No-one cares about qualifications!"
Debbie takes her to one side and insists, “No-one cares about qualifications, as long as you can do the job.”
"You could destroy the business!"
Gwyneth complains that it is false advertising, and that she could destroy the business.
“It’s no big deal – the till’s been pinging, thanks to me!” Debbie boasts, but Gwyneth predicts that it will not be pinging once the story comes out, and tells her she can forget her pay rise.
"You're this close to getting the sack!"
She is within a hair’s-breadth of sacking Debbie.
"I don't feel well, Diane"
Dai and Diane are sitting on the sofa, and Dai says he is not feeling himself;  “I don’t know what’s wrong with me!” he moans, and Diane does not think they should go to Scotland.
"We have to go to the game!"
He insists, “What are you talking about?   We have to go to the game!   I’ve made arrangements to meet Jimmy and the rugby club lads!”   She argues that he is not in any shape to go, but he is sure that he will be fine by the weekend.
In any case, Diane does not want to leave Jason;  “Oh, please – will you stop worrying about him, and mollycoddling him!” Dai roars,
Jason is in a rather subdued mood
and at that moment he comes in, seemingly rather quiet.   His mother wonders if something has upset him.
"Your mother's thinking of cancelling Scotland"
“Your mother is thinking of cancelling Scotland because she’s worried about you,” Dai explains, and Jason assures her that he will be fine.
"You can't cancel because of me!"
He says that she cannot cancel the Scotland trip because of him;  “I know it won’t be easy, but you’ll just have to trust me – you have to go to Scotland, or I’ll feel worse than I do now.
"Not unless you're a lot better, Dai!"
Diane is persuaded, but adds, “Not unless you’re a lot better, Dai!”
"Look, I didn't try to put my foot in it"
Mark and Debbie arrive home, as he insists that he did not try to put his foot in it.
"People will say I'm a fraud!"
“People will talk about me now, saying I’m a fraud!” she wails.   Mark tells her not to be so dramatic, but she goes on,
"I've worked so hard to make a go of it!"
“I’ve worked so hard to make a go of these treatments – to do something good, and get this family out of a financial hole!   And you’ve spoiled everything with your big mouth!   ‘Sorry’ isn’t going to pay for a new timing belt, is it?   How can we afford that now?
"You've made a fool of me in front of everyone!"
“You’ve made me feel like a fool in front of everyone!”
"Debs, Debs!"
She hurries off upstairs.
"I'm sure we'll find something to fill your bag"
Siôn tells Megan that he is sure they will find something with which to fill her bag;  she reports that Britt has been agitating her.
"Britt and Garry are trying to scare me"
“She and Garry are trying to scare me so that I withdraw my evidence against Colin.”
"They're scared stiff that Colin could be jailed"
Siôn says that they must be frightened as well;  “Scared stiff that Colin could be jailed,” but she maintains that is no reason to try and frighten her.
"When the Monks are desperate, they'll do anything"
“As they see it, you’re standing between Colin and jail – and when the Monks are desperate, they’ll do anything.
"He won't last two minutes in there!"
“I know it’s not right, but they don’t think it’s right that Colin should could be jailed, either.   He’s scared of being locked up with murderers and rapists – he won’t last two minutes in there!”
"But he's broken the law!"
“But he’s broken the law!” she points out;
"I would do the same in the circumstances"
Siôn says that if someone threatened one of his boys, he would do the same.   He asks, “Look, Colin’s actions were wrong by law – but were they morally wrong?”
"I could be in trouble if I withdraw my evidence"
Megan replies that Britt and Gary should not have tried to frighten her, and that she could be in trouble if she withdraws her evidence.
"Not half as much trouble as Colin!"
“Not half as much trouble as Colin!” says Siôn.
"Do you think I should?"
“Do you think I should withdraw my evidence?” she asks,
"Only you can make that decision, Megan"
and he replies that she is the only one who can make that decision.
