An anniversary cushion
Jaclyn comes into number 10 and is presented with a commemorative cushion by Gerwyn;  she is very pleased and hugs him.
"Embarrassing!"
“Embarrassing!” comments Guto, “Announcing to everyone that you got married after we arrived.”
They remember their first dance
Jaclyn remembers their first dance, which was special, and tells her mother-in-law that they are reliving memories.
Brenda pretends that she has forgotten all about their anniversary,
Brenda gives them the post
and has found a card addressed to Tesni;  “From some young man, probably.”   Her father immediately wants to know who has sent it,
"It doesn't say"
but, as is customary, it does not say.   Tesni maintains that Guto’s card must have got lost in the post.
Jason thinks flowers will sort everything out
Jason still has a key, he lets himself into number 10, armed with a bunch of flowers, but after shouting for her, finds that Sara is not there;
There is a note for him on the table
there is, however, a note for him on the table,
"Don't bother looking for us"
which reads, “Jason, I knew you’d come home so Ifan and I have left.   Don’t bother looking for us.”   He gets out his phone and leaves the house.
"Did Tes get the card?"
Ricky serves Tesni and her brother in the café;  he whispers to Guto, “Did Tes get the card?”   He is told that she thinks Mathew sent it – that is why Guto told him to sign it.   Ricky wonders what to wear to the party tonight,
"She's going as Princess Leia"
and is informed that Tesni will be going as Princess Leia from Star Wars,
Ricky has a brainwave
which gives Ricky an idea.
Jason is now at Awyr Iach, and demands whether DJ has been contacted by Sara;
"She didn't say where she was"
“Yes, she phoned earlier – she didn’t say where she was, and even if she had, I wouldn’t tell you!” is DJ’s stern reply, “She opened her heart and told me all about the lies and deception – and the £10,000 you stole from Siôn and Anita!”
"That's thanks to your mother!"
Jason protests that all the money has been paid back, but DJ points out that was thanks to Diane.
"You haven't been an angel in all this"
“You haven’t been an angel in all this, remember, DJ?” insists Jason, “You’ve known about it for a while, but you didn’t tell her!”
"Clear off – I've got work to do!"
DJ is tired of this and tells him to go away, as he has work to do.
A heavy box of fancy dress costumes
Eifion and Kath come into number 10, carrying a heavy box of fancy dress costumes from Iori.
Eifion is feeling the strain in his shoulder
When Eifion asks if they get a tip for helping,
"You can come to the party"
Brenda invites them to the party, and promises a free drink if they are lucky.   “You said there was a free bar and entertainment,” moans Kath, and after Eifion has gone,
"You're wasting your time, flirting with that one"
she adds, “You’re wasting your time flirting with that one – he’s gay!”
"My chances of staying depend on tonight"
Brenda is eager to see what is in the box, and comments, “My chances of staying in Cwmderi depend on tonight.”   Kath advises her that, in that case, she might as well start packing now, as, knowing Iori, there will only be rubbish in the box.
"There's a party in here tonight"
Eifion walks into the Deri, where Rhys and DJ are chatting;  “Have you got anything on tonight?” he asks, “I’ve got a great idea for single men like you.   There’s a party in here – Brenda has invited me and a couple of mates.”
"It's better than playing on the computer"
Rhys supposes that it would be better than playing on the computer, and Eifion suggests to DJ, “You don’t want to spend the night with Dai and Diane, do you?”
"Dai and Diane will be snogging all night!"
Rhys predicts that they will be snogging all night, because it’s Valentine’s.   DJ reluctantly agrees that he will come for one drink.
Then Eifion alleges that it is a fancy dress party,
"Men have to dress as women, don't they?"
and Rhys joins in, maintaining that men have to dress as women, and vice versa.
"We could be the Spice Girls!"
He goes on that they could dress up as the Spice Girls.
Ricky rehearses his chat-up line
Ricky is at Maes-y-Deri, practising his chat up line for Tesni;
"Hurry up, or the free bar will have finished"
Kath walks in, dressed as a nun, and encourages him to hurry up, or the free bar will have finished.
"I'm nervous, Gran"
He admits that he is rather nervous, and she has no idea who he is supposed to be.
He replies, “Han Solo, obviously – but I’m not nervous about this – I’m nervous about seeing Tesni.”
"You'll get a chance to talk to Tesni"
Kath reassures him that he will get a chance to talk to her later, and his Gran will sort everything out.
She says he needs some Dutch courage . . .
She gets out a bottle from the cupboard
. . . which he finds rather potent
to give him some Dutch courage.
Brenda waits for the happy couple
Outside the Deri, Brenda is waiting for the guests of honour, and she is joined by Garry,
Garry presents her with the bill
who presents her with a bill for the party.   She tells him to hide it, because their guests will soon be there, and they are not supposed to know what happens behind the scenes.
“I’ve already paid for the buffet!” Garry points out, but she maintains they can worry about the cost tomorrow.
"I want the money tonight!"
“I want the money tonight!” he demands, but she informs him that money is the last thing he should be thinking about on a night like tonight.
"You're all right – despite what everyone says!"
She tells him, “You’re all right, aren’t you – despite what everyone says!”
The guests are waiting
Inside the Deri, a crowd has gathered, and they prepare to welcome Jaclyn and Gerwyn.
"Oh yes, I'm surprised!"
“Happy Anniversary!” they all shout, and Jaclyn pretends to be surprised.   They are presented with their fancy dress outfits.
Guto tells Tesni that he feels stupid;
"You look stupid, too"
“You look stupid, too – no wonder you didn’t get a card,” she replies.   He asks her if she knows who sent the card, and she is quite clear that she is under the impression it was Mathew.
"It was Ricky, actually!"
“It was Ricky, actually – not so smug now, are you?” he says.
Ffion appears as St Dwynwen
Ffion, who is dressed as St Dwynwen, who Brenda has never heard of, congratulates the happy couple, and Eifion enquires about the entertainment.
Brenda informs him that it is someone who was popular before he was born.
Extreme mirth is caused by the arrival of . . .
Then the whole clientèle bursts into uproarious laughter
'Scary Spice' Ashurst
as DJ arrives, dressed as a rather large and buxom woman;  he very soon realises that he has been set up, and describes Eifion as, “You swine!”
Kath is wondering when the entertainment will arrive, and is told by Brenda that it is already there;  Jaclyn has noticed that Guto has brought his keyboard, and Gerwyn dreads what is coming next.   “An anonymous woman, who sang in the clubs in the 70s,” Brenda announces,
Brenda announces that the artist tonight is – her
“Please give a round of applause for your artist tonight – me!”
"She can't sing!"
Ffion remarks, “I didn’t know your mother could sing,” and is told by Jaclyn that she cannot sing.
Most unconvincing keyboard technique
Brenda very unconvincingly ‘plays’ the keyboard and sings tunelessly.
Ricky imbibes more Dutch courage
Ricky has just finished another pint, and Rhys tells him to slow down, as he has only just arrived.   His grandmother puts her plan into action,
"Isn't it nice that your Gran organised all this?"
going across and remarking, “Isn’t it nice that your Gran organised all of this?” but Gerwyn suspects the party is more for Brenda than for him and Jaclyn.
“Ricky did something similar for me on my special birthday,” Kath goes on, and Tesni asks if it was her 70th, which causes some embarrassment.
"Ricky thinks of everyone apart from himself"
“That’s what Ricky’s like, thinking of everyone apart from himself,” Kath adds, “That’s why he didn’t go to Oxford – he thought it might be a financial strain on the family – he’s a brainy boy – he wants to be a solicitor.”   Tesni decides she is going to get some food.
Yet more alcohol
Meanwhile, Ricky is just starting on yet another pint, as Brenda’s song goes on, interminably.
Light-fingered Jason finds an unattended bag
Jason has just come into the Deri, and sees an unattended handbag on a table;  as his hand reaches towards it, DJ approaches, and he says that DJ has misunderstood.
"You've forgotten about Sara and Ifan!"
“I haven’t misunderstood anything – you’ve come to enjoy yourself, and forgotten about Sara and Ifan!”
Just in time, Ffion reclaims her bag
Before Jason can do anything else, Ffion returns to collect her handbag, and he leaves again, just as Gwyneth comes in.
"It's important to fit in"
Ffion was not expecting to see her, but Gwyneth says, “I didn’t have anything better to do, and it is important to fit in.”
They are approaching the buffet . . .
As she and Ffion head towards the buffet,
. . . when Brenda challenges Gwyneth
Brenda shouts, “Oi!   Sorry, but the food is for guests only!”
"She has come with me"
Ffion points out that Gwyneth has come with her, and by the bar, Kath instructs Ricky to go over to Tesni.
Ricky thinks he is ready now
He takes another swig from his glass, and then walks across
"What a coincidence"
and comments, “What a coincidence – you’ve come as Princess Leia, and I’m Han Solo, her boyfriend!”
"You sound as cheesy as your card!"
Her response is that he sounds as cheesy as the card he sent.   He continues, “There’s something I want to ask you,”
Ricky is overwhelmed by the alcohol
but then the effects of all that alcohol are too much for him, and he has to hurry outside.
Jason sends another begging message . . .
By the door of the Deri, Jason is leaving another message for Sara,
. . . and Ricky vomits over his shoes
when Ricky rushes out of the door, and vomits over his shoes.   “What are you doing, you pig?” Jason shouts, “He’s thrown up all over my shoes!”
"I suppose you've never done anything stupid!"
Rhys has also come out, and tells Jason, “I suppose you’ve never done anything stupid!”   Ignoring Ricky’s pleading to go back inside and speaks to Tesni,
"You should stay 'solo' tonight, Ricky"
Rhys escorts him home, recommended that he should stay ‘solo’ tonight.
"That one's a chancer!"
Inside, Kath points out to Brenda that Gwyneth is a chancer;  “She and Ffion aren’t friends!”
Jaclyn thanks her mother-in-law for tonight, and has not enjoyed herself so much for ages.
It must be the drink talking
She also reveals that she has known about this so-called ‘surprise’ party for days;  “You’re welcome to stay for as long as you like!” she says, rather unwisely.
Brenda is pleased to hear that she does not have to pack her bags after all – mission accomplished.
"Garry Monk!"
Then she moves to the bottom of the stairs and calls up to Garry Monk;
"Are you paying up at last?"
he comes down and asks, “Are you paying up at last?”   She insists that she wants a word with him, but he protests that he is trying to celebrate Valentine’s with his wife.
Gwern overhears everything from upstairs
Gwern is listening from upstairs as Brenda begins, “I don’t want Gwyneth Jones here.   She spoiled New Year’s Eve for everyone – and I don’t want her doing that now.
"You're the landlord – throw her out!"
“You’re the landlord – throw her out!”    He insists that he cannot throw her out for doing nothing.
“I’ve heard what she’s like – she deceives people, insults people, takes advantage. All she’s done tonight is down drinks and stuff herself with sandwiches.”
"That's what everyone else has been doing"
Garry reminds her that is what everyone else has been doing, and suggests that Brenda has a word with her.
“We’re paying for tonight!” she warns him, “I’ll expect a discount if she’s still here in ten minutes!”   Uncharacteristically, Garry caves into her demand.
Gwyneth is given her marching orders . . .
He tells Gwyneth, “I’m sorry, you’ll have to leave – the organisers don’t want you here.”
. . . as Gwern listens
As the eavesdropping Gwern looks increasingly concerned, Gwyneth says she thought that everyone was welcome, but Garry maintains he has every right to turn people away.
"Unless you want to make a spectacle of yourself"
“Now, Gwyneth, please – unless you want to make spectacle of yourself.”
Gwyneth turns to go
She has no choice but to go, and Brenda snarls, “What’s she doing in this village, anyway?   Right, that’s enough drama for one night!”
"I have to talk to Tesni!"
When Rhys gets him home to Maes-y-Deri, Ricky is insistent that he must go back to the party, but only takes a few unsteady steps before collapsing again on to the sofa.   “I have to talk to Tesni,” he protests, but is told that he can talk to her tomorrow.
"I don't want to leave it too late – again!"
“I don’t want to miss the chance, and leave it too late – again!” he wails, but Rhys tells him to wait until he is sober.   “You don’t understand – can’t you see how difficult this is for me?” Ricky demands, “How difficult it is – I don’t want to forget her.
"I really don't want to forget about her"
“I really don’t want to forget about her, but I think I’m ready to move on.”
"You're talking gibberish now"
Rhys says that he is talking gibberish, but Ricky explains,
"Courtney!"
“Courtney – it’s been more than two years since she . . . and sometimes it’s hard not to imagine what my life would be like if she were still here.   But she’s not – I’m here . . .
"I'm ready now – I think"
“but I’m ready now – I think.”
He throws up in the sink
Then he has the uncontrollable urge to throw up in the sink.
Jaclyn and Gerwyn are dancing
Jaclyn and Gerwyn are dancing in the Deri, with their children watching them;
"This is really embarrassing"
“This is really embarrassing,” remarks Tesni.
"I won't forget this, Eifion!"
At the bar, DJ, in his drag outfit, warns Eifion, “I won’t forget this – getting me to dress like this,”
"You've had more attention tonight than for ages"
but Eifion maintains that he has had more attention than he has for ages.
"Gerwyn, Jaclyn, you should come outside!"
Ffion, who left the pub a few minutes ago, comes back into the Deri to tell Gerwyn and Jaclyn they should come outside.
They rush out of the Deri . . .
When they emerge, they see that Brenda is being arrested by the police;
. . . to see Brenda being arrested
“Being drunk in charge of a carriage!” she shouts, as she is bundled into the police car.
"What is everyone going to think of us?"
Tesni thinks that this is quite hilarious, but Jaclyn worries, “What is everybody going to think of us?
Brenda is dragged away to the cells
The laughter continues as Brenda waves to them from the back of the car.
