"Happy birthday to you!"
At Penrhewl, they are singing ‘happy birthday’ to Eileen,
Eifion gives Eileen a gift
and Eifion presents her with a gift, a little T-shirt for Huwi-John;  he apologises for not having time to get a proper present.   “If you’ve forgotten this year again, there will be trouble,” she warns Jim,
Jim thinks he has done something right . . .
and he gives her a small box containing a pendant, which she points out is identical to the one she is wearing.
. . . but is disappointed
Jim looks very downcast, but Sioned springs to the rescue,
Sioned is quick to rescue him
saying, “Don’t forget to give her the big present.”
"A night in a five star hotel"
She looks in a drawer and finds a card, announcing, “A night in a five star hotel with a spa and dinner – and you’re going tonight!   Eifion and I will look after Huwi.”
Eileen is very reluctant to leave her child,
"Huwi-John will be fine with us"
but they assure her that he will be fine with them.
"I've got a very special husband!"
Eventually she agrees, and says that she has a very special husband.
Izzy is ready for the interview
Izzy has smartened herself up for the interview, and her mother comments, “They say that what you wear to an interview is as important as what you say.”   Izzy does not feel like herself, but is told that it will only be for an hour, and Gaynor is surprised that Mathew and Rhys are also trying for this job.
"I doubt if they have the qualifications"
“I doubt if they have the qualifications needed for it,” she says, and Izzy doubts whether she does, maintaining that no-one else has a chance, with Siôn White there.
"And his son-in-law is on the panel"
“And his son-in-law is on the panel,” she adds, but her mother informs her that Tyler is very professional, and it will be good experience for her.
Izzy says she is not going, after all
Izzy is convinced that she will make a fool of herself, especially wearing her mother’s clothes.   She decides that she is not going,
"It will do you good to have a job"
but is told that it will do her good to have a job, as well as the money and independence.
“At least show you are willing to try for this job!” Gaynor goes on,
"Things have to change, and it's up to you!"
“Things have to change, Izzy, and it’s up to you.”
"There's something special about a man in a suit"
Outside the shop, Anita assures Siôn that he looks special;  “There’s something about a man in a suit.”   He is quite confident of getting the job, and looking forward to being paid to do something he loves doing.
"It's all right, Mathew is out of bed!"
Tesni comes along the street, and Rhys, also smartly dressed, tells her that Mathew is already out of bed.
"I'm amazed that he's trying for this job"
Siôn is amazed that Rhys is trying for this job,
"I had to steal a tie from Dad"
and Rhys reveals that he had to steal a tie from his father for the occasion.
Two members of the panel arrive
Diane arrives from the other direction, with a man, who is presumably another member of the interview panel.
Tesni helps Mathew with his preparation . . .
In the shop flat, Tesni is running through some questions on sponsorship with Mathew, in preparation for the interview;
. . . and he answers the question correctly
he answers correctly,
"Clever boy!"
and she calls him, “A clever boy – you look so smart!”
He considers it simply a charade,
"Do you want to do something later?"
and asks if she wants to do something later;  “I was thinking drinks to start, and then perhaps a bit of food.”
"I can't refuse an offer like that!"
She cannot refuse an offer like that.
"Good luck, Math!"
Now he must go for that interview, and will see Tesni later;
Then she has a glass of water
when he has gone, she drinks a glass of water.
Jim and Eileen are all ready to go
At Penrhewl, they are almost ready to go for their night out, and Sioned is holding the rather boisterous Huwi-John;  she advises her mother to take a swimsuit, as there is a pool at the hotel.
"There's plenty of milk in the fridge for Huwi"
Eileen points out that there is plenty of milk in the fridge for Huwi,
Huwi-John seems to show little interest in his mother
and she kisses the baby, who does not appear to be interested in her.   When they have gone,
"We're going to have fun, aren't we?"
Sioned tells him, “We’re going to have fun, aren’t we?”
Three candidates await their turn
Siôn, Rhys and Mathew are awaiting their interview;
Beti was the first to be interviewed
Diane comes downstairs with Beti, the first applicant, and Siôn cannot resist asking her how it went.
"It was harder than I thought it would be"
“It was harder than I thought it would be,” Beti replies.
"What do you think will be most valuable to you in this job?"
Then he turns to Matthew and asks, “What do you think will be most valuable to you in this job?”
"You can't blame us for trying"
Mathew replies that they may be younger than him, and have less life experience, but he can’t blame them for trying.
"I'm glad I found that e-mail – or I would have made a fool of myself"
Rhys remarks, with a completely straight face, “I’m glad I found that e-mail in the junk mail last night – or I would have made a real fool of myself today!”   Mathew goes along with this, causing Siôn some dismay.
"E-mail?   What e-mail?"
When he enquires about the e-mail, Mathew explains that it was about the musical requirements, and Rhys embroiders this, maintaining that it mentioned holding R&B workshops and going to gigs.
“Mind you, I’m excited about the surfing lessons!” Mathew goes on, and asks Siôn if he has a wetsuit.
"We were telling Siôn about the requirements"
Izzy has just come in, and is informed that they were telling Siôn about the requirements to be able to surf and like Welsh bands.
"Yes, I'm glad I knew that!"
Izzy readily joins in the deception,
"This is completely unfair!"
and Siôn regards it as completely unfair, as he has not heard anything about this.
"Schoolboy error, Siôn – check your junk mail!"
“Schoolboy error, Siôn,” scoffs Rhys, “Everyone knows to check their junk mail!”
"Siôn White, please"
Diane calls the next applicant, Siôn White, and he goes upstairs, in a very confused state,
They fall about laughing
while the other three have a good laugh.
Sioned is in a full-scale panic
Sioned is having problems with Huwi-John, who does not want his milk and is crying incessantly;  she leaves another message for Eifion, that he will not stop screaming and does not want to be fed.
"I'm about to lose my mind!"
“Please phone me back – I’m just about to lose my mind!”
When Siôn comes back from his interview, he tells them their little joke was very funny, and warns that they should be nervous, as he appears to think he has the job sewn up.
Now Siôn is wise to their little joke
“Come on,” he tells Izzy, “You wouldn’t be here if your mother hadn’t heard about the job from me.”   Mathew says he sounds as if he is afraid of a bit of competition.
"Letting your mother direct your path in life!"
Siôn goes on, “It is a bit odd – letting your mother direct your path in life!”
"He's right – I don't want this job!"
Izzy says that he is right, and she does not want this job – her mother wants it.   Rhys points out that no harm will come from trying, but she is determined to leave.
Level-headed Mathew talks some sense into her
“What would you prefer?” demands Mathew, “To leave because Siôn belittled you, or to be able to tell your Mam that you tried your best, despite the fact that you didn’t want the job?”
"Esyllt Evans, please"
At that moment, Diane calls the next name, “Esyllt Evans, please,” then realises it is Izzy;  Mathew wishes her good luck.
Sioned is in a terrible state
By this time, Sioned is in a state of utter desperation;  Huwi is still crying when Eifion comes in, having left his mobile in the pickup.
"Is Huwi upstairs?"
“Is Huwi upstairs?” he demands, and she tells him she had to close the door – she just wanted him to stop crying.
"Don't worry – that's what babies do!"
Eifion tells her not to worry;  “That’s what babies do – I’ll go up to him now, and I’ll bring him down if I get him to stop screaming.”
Sioned has been put off babysitting
Sioned has clearly had enough of this babysitting business.
Izzy looks quite confident
Siôn is sitting in the Deri with Anita, when Izzy comes in, looking quite confident, and Gaynor remarks, “The fact that Izzy tried at all is a success in itself – she’s a young woman who knows her own mind.”
Izzy orders the drinks
Gaynor gives Izzy some money for the next round of drinks.
At the bar, Siôn says that the panel is taking its time, and apologises to Izzy for speaking to her the way he did;
"Yes, it was a bit extreme!"
she agrees that it was a bit extreme.
"I feel passionate about this job"
“I just feel passionate about what this job could accomplish,” he says, and Izzy feels the same way.
"I enjoyed the interview very much"
Then he receives a phone call;  he comments that he enjoyed the interview very much.
Sioned is enjoying the peace and quiet
All is now quiet at Penrhewl, and Sioned is reluctant to give Huwi another feed, as he is sleeping peacefully;  “You’re just like Kath – one smile from her, and Huwi just giggles.”
"I'm not motherly at all"
Eifion says that she will get used to it, but she replies, “Perhaps I need to accept that I’m not motherly at all.
"I was losing patience – that's not motherly!"
“I was starting to lose patience when he was crying – that’s not very motherly, is it?”
"You'll cope – because you won't have any choice"
Eifion maintains that she will make a lovely mother, and that she will cope because she will not have any choice – that’s what parents do.   “Right, you feed him, and I have to go and check on the lambs.”
"Don't go, Eifion!"
She pleads with him not to go, but he advises, “I’ll only be half an hour –
"Come on, your little brother needs you!"
“come on, your little brother needs you!”
Huwi-John appears now to have turned into . . .
She goes over to see him,
. . . a perfect little angel
and he now appears to be perfectly happy.
"You're back and forth to the toilet"
Mathew is worried about Tesni;  “Are you are OK?   You haven’t drunk much, and you’re back and forth to the toilet.”   Rhys reminds her that she is not supposed to drink at all, being underage.
"Shall we go and congratulate Siôn?"
“Right, shall we go to the Deri to congratulate Siôn?” Mathew asks, “He’s bound to be there celebrating!”
"I might have got the job!"
Rhys suggests that he might have got the job – he has not heard yet, and he maintains that they phone the unsuccessful candidates, like Mathew, first.
"Thanks for letting me know!"
Then his phone sounds, and he puts on an optimistic tone;  “Right, thanks for letting me know – bye now!”
"Of course I'm joking!"
Then he admits that he was joking, and suggests that they go and drown their sorrows in style, clubbing in Swansea.
"I won't have any money left for the rest of the week"
Mathew is not in favour, as he will not have any money left for the rest of the week, but is won round by Rhys’ persuasive argument.
"I'm sure that Izzy would like to come"
“I’m sure that Izzy would like to come,” he says, phoning her number.
"Dad wouldn't like it"
Tesni tells Mathew that she had better go, as she is skint, and in any case, her father would not be pleased if she went out, without him knowing.   Mathew regards it as a shame, but they will make up for it another time;
"Don't enjoy yourself too much without me!"
she warns him not to enjoy himself too much without her, and he says he will try not to.
Siôn shows acute disappointment . . .
Siôn is very depressed by the news;  “I was so convinced – I had already thought of six months’ worth of activities.   I don’t know what I want to do now.”
. . . while Izzy is receiving some good news . . .
Over by the bar, Izzy is on the phone;  “Yes, it is good news – thanks – I shall probably celebrate quietly at home.   Yes, we’ll talk tomorrow.”
. . . and her mother is overjoyed
Her mother congratulates her and gives her a hug, much to Siôn’s surprise;
Siôn is for once speechless
he is lost for words.
"Every parent deserves a medal"
Now that all is peaceful at Penrhewl, Sioned says, “Every parent deserves a medal, if you ask me,” and Eifion agrees with her.   “So many things can go wrong,” she adds.
He remembers that things used to happen to him all the time at the start;  “Especially with Bobi –
"I don't think I slep properly for two years"
“I don’t think I slept properly for two years – but you get through it, with a bit of help.   And the fact that it’s your flesh and blood screaming in your arms means you cope.”
"Do you think I've changed?"
Sioned asks if he thinks that she has changed;  “You know you have,” he replies, “Do you really think the old Sioned would have saved Jim’s skin, like you did today?   She would have enjoyed watching him suffer!”
"It's a nice feeling, you know"
She responds, “There’s no point being like that, is there?   It’s a nice feeling, you know, having my little brother in my arms – and you at my side.”
Izzy does not know what to say to Siôn
In the Deri, Izzy is not sure what to say to Siôn;  he replies, “Perhaps it’s better not to say anything – you know how disappointed I am.
He is convinced that this was not entirely above board
“No disrespect, but I shall want to know exactly how the panel reached its decision.
"I know it was unexpected"
Izzy tells her mother she is allowed to say that it was unexpected, and Gaynor checks that she does intend to accept the job.
Mathew arrives
Mathew comes in,
"Fancy celebrating not getting the job?"
asking, “Do you fancy a night out in Swansea, to celebrate not getting the job?   It’s guaranteed that Siôn was smug!”
He is very pleased to hear that she did get it
He is amazed to hear that Izzy was successful, and gives her a hug.
"Go out and enjoy yourself!"
Gaynor hands over some money, and tells Izzy to go out and enjoy herself;  “You can pay me back when you start working.”
Penrhewl is sleeping when Jim and Eileen return
It is the early hours of the morning when Jim and Eileen return to the farmhouse, and find Eifion, Sioned and the baby fast asleep in the kitchen.
Eileen goes straight to her son
Jim is not exactly happy at being dragged back home, but Eileen has to see her Huwi-John.
"What was wrong with the hotel, then?"
Sioned wonders what they are doing back at three in the morning;
"Your mother insisted on coming home"
“Your mother’s ruined her birthday treat – she insisted on coming home,” Jim grumbles, “The place was perfect.”
"I couldn't sleep without Huwi"
Eileen continues that she could not sleep without Huwi, although Jim was snoring like a pig.
"I've been out with the lambs most of the day"
When asked whether Huwi has been behaving, Eifion replies that he does not know;  “I’ve been out with the lambs most of the day,” and Sioned confirms that he has been a little angel.
“Perhaps we should go away more often, if he behaved impeccably,” Jim suggests, “She could babysit every Friday night!”
"Perhaps not every Friday!"
Sioned does not relish the prospect of every Friday night.   Eileen takes the baby up to bed.
"You need to start believing in yourself"
Sioned thanks Eifion for his help, and he tells her she needs to start believing in herself;
"What would I do without you?"
“What would I do without you?” she sighs, and gives him a hug.
"Enjoy your lie-in!"
He complains that it will soon be time for him to get up, and tells Sioned to enjoy her lie-in.
