“Your new wife isn’t here – and she wasn’t here over the weekend for her birthday.”

Ed assures her that Kelly will get the card and presents when she gets back, and he is confident that things will be better now.

“I hope so, because I don’t like secrets between a husband and wife!” Anita grumbles, and he demands what secrets she is referring to.

“I’m not keeping any secrets from her!’ he insists, and as Anita is trying to explain what she means,

| At that moment, Kelly returns |
the café door opens and Kelly walks in. She immediately takes off her coat, and is but ready for work.
Ed points out that she does not have to start work straightaway,

but she says she has been neglecting her duties.

| Iolo appears to have been told Kelly's mother was ill |
Iolo, who is waiting at the counter, asks how Kelly’s mother is now, and is told that she is much better. Ed asks if Kelly is better too, and to that she replies, “I’m fine and I just want to get on with my work.”

| Anita wonders what is going on |
As Iolo asks for three coffees, Anita turns and leaves the café, looking concerned.

| "If I had know what it would take to bring you back . . ." |
“If I had known this is what it would take to bring you back to Cwmderi, I would have gone to jail ages ago!” Colin jokes, but Izzy does not know how long she will be staying in the village. “I’m sure your mother loves having you about the place,” he says; she admits she is getting on her mother’s nerves already.

“Things have gone back to normal pretty quickly, then,” he remarks.

| "Don't make a joke of everything!" |
“Don’t make a joke of everything!” Izzy urges him, “I’d prefer it if you were honest with me, instead of hiding behind your laughter.” He apologises, and asks how her mother is,

and also wonders if she has seen Britt, which she has not, and Colin is downhearted.
Izzy says that she is going now, and he protests that she has only been there five minutes;

“I can see it in your eyes that there’s something wrong – I knew it – you are being treated badly.”

| "No-one comes to visit me!" |
He explains that the problem is he is not getting any sleep, because he is worrying that no-one comes to visit him. Izzy is angry about this; “Not even Britt – or Mam?”

He shakes his head and is feeling rather lonely; she can appreciate that.

| Siôn has his eye on a job at the Antur |
Siôn is looking at online job listings, particularly one for ‘Community Development Officer’,

| "Diane's been going on about that for ages" |
but Anita says that Diane has been going on about creating that job in Yr Antur for ages. “You should have told me about it – the pay is pretty good, and it would only be for three days a week,” enthuses Siôn. Anita was under the impression he was too busy with translating, and in any case, he already contributes more to the community than anyone else.

“Well, if I do the work, I may as well get paid for it,” he replies, as he goes to answer the door.

| Anita is not pleased to see their visitors |
Anita is not very pleased to see that it is Iolo and Tyler, together with Greta, bringing a little gift for them for babysitting over the weekend.

“Normally, I would offer you a cup of tea, but we’re on our way out,” Anita tells them, in a rather unfriendly fashion, and she also points out, “There won’t be a family dinner this week, as I’m busier than usual at work. We’re offering Welsh Tapas – it’s Jaclyn’s idea.

“Tyler, do you think you could take these pamphlets around the school for me? Siôn and I were just on our way to Tapas now.”

Siôn maintains that there is no rush, and they have time for a cup of tea, but she overrules him, insisting that she promised Jaclyn, and is glad that Siôn understands. Iolo and Tyler take the very broad hint and leave.

| Dai is working on something exotic |
At Bryntirion, Dai is cooking, and Diane complains about the mess;

| "I'll clear up later, Diane" |
“I’ll clear that up later,” he says, and hands her some chopsticks, which she says he is not used to handling. “At least I’m going to try and use a bit of imagination,” Dai informs her.
 |
| "That looks . . . different, Dai!" |
Jason comes in and remarks that the food looks . . . different;
 |
| "You can say that again if Dai's cooking!" |
“You can say that again if Dai’s cooking it!” snarls Diane.
 |
| "We're welcoming boys from Japan" |
“Look, we are welcoming boys from Japan, and they will be here in a minute – it will take hours to marinade this salmon in teriyaki sauce,” he tells Diane, “I don’t understand you – we’re welcoming boys from the other side of the world.”

| "Why are they coming here?" |
Diane has not grasped why they are coming here, and he explains that Gaynor is hosting a week of activities to celebrate Japanese culture – a rugby tournament and everything
“But why us? We have no connection to the school any more,” puzzles Diane, “No-one else is having students from Japan.”

| "Little Ifan will be at the school soon" |
Dai maintains that it is important to keep Gaynor happy, as little Ifan will be at the school before long.
“Right, I’m just popping upstairs to put a kimono each on their beds,” he adds.

| "Why are you grinning like a Cheshire cat?" |
Diane wants to know why Jason is grinning like a Cheshire cat, and he replies, “Can’t you see what he’s doing? His big plan?

| "Dai doesn't do anything, unless he gets something in return" |
“Dai doesn’t do anything for anyone unless he gets something in return. This is an exchange visit, isn’t it? Where is the Rugby World Cup being held in the autumn?”

In Tapas, Gaynor has just ordered some food from Dean when Anita and Siôn arrive, carrying boxes;

she is complaining about having to listen to him going on and on about this job.

| Siôn explains what the job is |
He explains to Gaynor that the Antur wants a community development officer; “No-one has applied yet, and the closing date is next Monday.”

Anita continues her moaning, and Gaynor makes the comment, “Does Anita make your decisions for you?”

| "I'm glad you're more positive after your holiday" |
Upstairs in the café flat, Kelly begins to open her birthday cards; Ed tells her, “I’m glad you’re more positive after your holiday.”

| "Who now – hold your horses!" |
“Whoa, now! Hold your horses – I’m just getting there,” she begins, “And there are a few things I need to get sorted, just to get my head back to normal.”

| Ed fetches her card and present |
He gives her a belated card and present, a pair of typically flamboyant earrings.

| "A bit 'out there' perhaps" |
“A bit out there, perhaps, but that’s the sort of thing you like,” he comments,

and then she opens her very impressive hand-made card.

She says that it is beautiful and thanks him; “You kept your artistic talents quiet,” as she removes her existing earrings

| Kelly puts on the new erarrings |
and puts on the new ones. Ed says that now they are married there should be no secrets between them,

and she is immediately suspicious.

| "I must have misunderstood Anita" |
“Anita said something, but perhaps I misunderstood,” he explains, and she agrees that he must have done, because she has not got any secrets, if that is what he is suggesting.
She proposes that they should forget this conversation; “I want things to go back to normal, but, as I said, I have to sort a couple of things –

“starting with seeing what Gaynor has to say about that kiss. Shall we go today, together?” He has little choice but to agree;

however, he is not looking forward to it at all.

| "If he thinks he's going to the other side of the world . . ." |
“If he thinks he’s going to the other side of the world to eat sushi, he can think again!” Diane grumbles to Sara, then, changing the subject, she comments, “Jason seems to be in good spirits.”

Sara confirms that Gamblers’ Anonymous is doing him good, especially their 12-step recovery plan.

She has a booklet explaining everything, which she gives to Diane; on the back of this leaflet,

Diane reads, in English, “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,” and does not consider that appropriate. “Our Jason – a Christian?” she scoffs.

Sara replies, “Listen, Diane, if talking to God helps Jason, I don’t care!”

| "You have visitors, Mam" |
Gaynor is out in the garden, planting flowers in pots, when Izzy announces that she has some visitors; Kelly and Ed.

| "Why did you kiss Ed?" |
Kelly wastes no time in getting to the point; “Why did you kiss Ed a couple of months ago?”
 |
| Gaynor is temporarily lost for words |
Gaynor is rather taken aback by this, and hesitantly explains that she regretted it straightaway.

| "A moment of madness, down the mine" |
Ed interrupts to say, “It was just a moment of madness, down in the mine,” and Gaynor is quite willing to admit that it was her fault and not Ed’s.

| "I want to know the truth!" |
“I want to know the truth, not what you think I want to hear, OK?” Kelly insists,

| "Don't shout at Mam like that!" |
and Izzy warns her not to shout at her mother like that. “What are you going to do about it?” Kelly snarls.
“It was my fault, and I’m sorry, honestly,” Gaynor says, and Kelly is glad that she feels like that.
Izzy again protests that Kelly should behave herself,

and is greeted by a tirade, “Shut up, Izzy!” Kelly then turns to Gaynor and warns her, “Stay away from my husband, yeah? I’m not going to waste any more time talking to these!”

| "Don't look at me like that!" |
She leaves, followed by Ed, and Gaynor says, “Don’t look at me like that – it was a moment of madness, all right?”

| Siôn has not followed Anita's instructions |
Anita is very displeased when she sees that Siôn has completed the application form for the post;

| "We could both benefit" |
“We could both benefit if I go for this job,” he informs her, “We would need a stricter childcare timetable – something you’ve wanted for a while.”

| She agrees that it would be a benefit |
She concedes that would be a benefit,

| "We could afford a few extra treats" |
and he goes on, “With a bit more money, we could afford a few extra treats as well – like a night in a hotel by the seaside, Cardiff – or London.”

It appears that he has won her over, but she has one condition – that they tell Iolo and Tyler about these new childcare rules –today – and that they stick to them.

Izzy comes out into the garden with a cup of tea, but has not made one for her mother; “I’d be treated better in prison,” remarks Gaynor, but Izzy wonders how she knows.

“I can’t believe you haven’t been to see Dad,” she says;
 |
| "I've been very busy" |
Gaynor’s excuse is that she has been too busy.

| "He's very upset, if you must know" |
“What effect do you think its having on him?” Izzy demands, “He’s very upset, if you must know!”
Her mother does not want to argue about this; “But if we’re going to be at each other’s throats like this,

| "It doesn't do you any good to be idle" |
“perhaps you should look for a job. It doesn’t do you any good to be idle, does it?” Izzy protests that she has only been home a week, but she is told that Yr Antur is advertising a job – Community Development Officer.

Izzy’s response is to tell her mother, “Get real, Mam!” but is informed that this would be an ideal opportunity, after what happened in Thailand; she is urged to consider it.

| Anita lays down some ground rules |
At number 7, Anita is spelling out, “We need a better arrangement – not a short notice warning a few hours before you bring Greta over to us. We both have lives as well, you know.”

| "We may not have been thoughtful enough" |
Iolo confesses that perhaps they have not been thoughtful enough, and Tyler reminds her that they need some slack in the system with children.

| "I'm applying for a new job" |
Anita instructs Siôn to tell them, so he begins, “It will be even more important from now on, because I’m applying for a new job –Community Development Officer,” and Anita stresses that they will not be able to have surprises any more.

Iolo and Tyler look at each other and smile;

| "I'll be disappointed if I don't get an interview" |
Siôn says that he will be very disappointed if he does not have an interview for this job, and wonders why they are laughing.

Iolo replies, “I’m pretty sure you’ll get an interview – because Tyler is on the interview panel.”

| "Perhaps we could have that family dinner after all" |
Siôn is of the opinion that perhaps they should have that family dinner after all, and Tyler suggests they could discuss childcare arrangements which would suit all of them.
Anita is angry because Siôn appears to be backtracking, and insists that they leave immediately;

He looks downhearted, and says he is going out to get some washing powder.

In the Deri, Aaron has several packets of nuts in front of him, and explains to Izzy that he and his mother like them. “Dad sends his regards to you, and Catrin too.” He asks how Colin is, and is told that he is in good spirits;

“But he’s surprised that Britt has not been to see him for a while – and so am I. Where has she been? “I just think it’s odd, that’s all.”

| "We'll throw a big party when he gets out" |
Aaron angrily answers, “It’s not odd, not wanting to go to visit the prison – anyway, we’ll throw a big party when he gets out.”

Izzy points out that her father does not like parties,

so Aaron gathers up his packets of nuts and leaves.

| "You told Mam too much last week!" |
Rhys comes over and offers to buy Izzy a drink, but she refuses to take anything from him; “You told Mam too much last week! She didn’t know I had not done the TEFL course.” [Teaching English as a Foreign Language]

He informs her that Gaynor figured it out on her own. “Now she’s punishing me by making me try for a new job at Yr Antur,” Izzy moans; he predicts that she might like it.

Jason and his mother come to the bar and he orders a pint; “You’re still drinking then,” Diane comments, and he wishes that she would stop it.

| "Just let me give it a chance" |
“I’m not just going to swap the casino for the chapel, OK?” he explains, “A lot of my friends in GA have turned to Christianity – anyway, it’s part of the 12 steps, so let me just give it a chance.”

Dai looks at his watch, and grumbles, “Where are they? Gaynor said they’re meeting me here now.”

| Diane reveals that she is wise to his ploy |
Diane reveals that she knows his game; “Rugby – or more specifically, the rugby world cup in Japan in the autumn.

| "Don't think for a second you're going to Japan!" |
“Don’t think for a second you’re going out to Japan to take advantage of the families of these students.”

| "Dai Ashurst? We're staying with you" |
Then someone taps him on the shoulder and asks, “Dai Ashurst? We’re staying with you.”
He looks round with surprise to find that they are not from Japan, and is told that they come from Gaerwen [a village on Anglesey].

| "Nefi wen! You're not from Japan!" |
Dai predictably exclaims, “Nefi wen! I was expecting two boys from Japan, for a rugby tournament ahead of the World Cup!”

As Jason and Diane exhibit some amusement, the boys explain that it is a tournament for Welsh schools.

| "I think Dai has misunderstood" |
Jason summarises the situation; “I think that Dai has misunderstood – come over with me, boys, do you want a drink, and some crisps?”

| "How could you make a mistake like that?" |
“How could you make a mistake like that?” Diane demands, “What exactly did Gaynor say?”
 |
| Dai recalls his garbled memories |
Dai remembers that she said there was a rugby tournament, and some boys needed a place to stay – then someone said something about Japan. He regrets not asking their names, and is reprimanded, “Typical you – not listening – thinking of yourself – and putting the cart before the horse!”

| "Good news – they do like salmon teriyaki" |
Jason has checked with the boys, and reports they do like salmon teriyaki.

| Sounds of vomiting come from the bathroom |
Ed returns to the flat with the washing powder, and hears the sounds of vomiting coming from the bathroom;

he calls to ask if Kelly is all right, and she replies, “I’m fine – don’t listen!”

| The empty wrappers, including one from ALDI . . . |
Then he sees on the table several empty packets of Aldi crisps and chocolate bars, which seem to indicate food cravings.

Even Ed is capable of putting together this evidence and reaching the inevitable conclusion.
