"Several items for you, Brenda"
Mark is delivering the post, and gives Brenda several items;
"What will it be – 64, like me?"
Cassie comes across the road and remarks, “Is someone having their birthday today?   What will it be – 64, like me?”
"No – Mam's 70!"
Before Brenda can answer, Gerwyn arrives, with some flowers in his hand, and emphasises that his mother is 70,
This is rather embarrassing
pointing out that it is nothing to be ashamed of.
Cassie maintains that it is only a number, and insists, “70 is the new 40!   Reaching your golden years is nothing to be ashamed of – I hope you’ve organised a party.”
"You said you didn't want any fuss, Maam"
Apparently Brenda has been saying that she does not want any fuss, and Cassie reprimands Gerwyn that he only has one mother;
"Come on, I'll treat you to a cream cake!"
she will take Brenda to the café for a cream cake.   Gerwyn is becoming tired of this.
"Jim's as proud as punch!"
In the Deri, Eileen praises Eifion, “Jim’s as proud as punch, and it’s all down to you!”   Eifion replies that he will be swimming the Channel next,
"Eurgh!   Jim covered in goose fat!"
but Eileen does not relish the thought of seeing Jim covered in goose fat.
Izzy is also praising Eifion
He returns to Izzy at the table, and she compliments him for sticking with Jim;  “I shouldn’t be drinking at lunchtime – I’ve got work to do,” she adds, but he replies that half of shandy will not do any harm.
Gaynor arrives in the Deri
Gaynor comes into the pub, and looks with distaste at them;
"Look, we have to sort this out"

Izzy is determined that this matter has to be sorted out;  “She will have to learn to like you!” she informs Eifion, and goes across to her mother.
"Come and join us for lunch, Mam"
“Couldn’t you find better company for lunch?” Gaynor snarls, but Izzy wants to have a proper discussion, so invites her mother to join them.
"I've lost my appetite for some reason!"
Her response is, “I’ve lost my appetite, for some reason!” and she marches out of the Deri.
"There, told you so!"
“Told you so,” Eifion comments, when Izzy goes back to him.
"I wonder where Ricky is"
At Maes-y-Deri, Mark is wondering where Ricky is, and at that moment he appears,
He appears with his pass certificate
carrying the written confirmation that he has passed his driving test.
They did not pass at their first attempt
Neither Mark nor Debbie passed at the first attempt, and he reckons he has the magic touch;
"Now I'm going to buy a car!"
“I’m going to buy a car, now I’ve passed my test,” he announces, but is subjected to opposition from his parents.
"I didn't have a car until I was 28"
“I didn’t have a car until I was 28,” Debbie recalls, but Ricky points out that things have changed now, and everyone his age has a car.   He has been saving, and is quite convinced that it will be worth it;  he will not have to depend on the bus, or lifts from his parents,
"Then I could give you a lift – saving taxi money"
He goes on, “Perhaps, if you want to go out, I could give you a lift – that would save on taxi money.”
Gerwyn painstakingly inserts sticks into sausages
Gerwyn is industriously preparing cheese and sausages on sticks, but hides them away when he hears someone coming;  Dylan is incredulous that Brenda is celebrating ‘the big 70’ and no-one has organised a party.   Jaclyn appreciates that she does not want to broadcast her age,
"Everyone knows now, don't they?"
but Brenda complains, “Everyone knows now, don’t they?”
Dylan says that they might as well have a party in the Deri,
"I thought you'd want a quiet celebration here"
and overrules Gerwyn’s suggestion that they could have a quiet celebration at the house.   “No, Dylan’s right – I want fuss, and I want a party!” Brenda decides.
"I'll pay for everything, Brenda!"
Of course, Dylan agrees to pay for everything, as it will be his way of showing his gratitude to them;  “How does bubbles and smoked salmon sound to you, Brenda?   Only the best for you!”
"Remember when she was drunk in charge of a carriage?"
Jaclyn hopes that Zöe will not be not invited, and also remembers that last time they had a party in the Deri, Brenda was arrested for being drunk in charge of a carriage.
Gerwyn is definitely not happy
Gerwyn is wearing a brooding look.
"He has no idea about living costs"
Mark tells Debbie, “He has no idea about living costs,” and she is mainly concerned that if he is paying for a car out of his savings, they will have to pay more of his college fees;  she maintains that he needs a wake-up call.
"We've been talking about this car business"
When Ricky comes in, his father begins, “Your mother and I have been talking about this car business – we don’t think it’s a good idea.   You should be saving towards college now,”
"You don't need a car"
and Debbie does not think he needs a car.
"There's petrol, MOT and insurance"
Ricky does not agree with this assessment, but his father points out that the petrol, MOT and insurance must also be taken into consideration;  “It will cost a fortune, and there’s nothing wrong with the bus.”
"You never go on the bus!"
Ricky reminds them that they never go on the bus, but is told that is different, and he will need every penny to go to college.
"That's already budgeted for"
Ricky replies that he has already budgeted for all of that;  “And you’re going to help me with the college fees, aren’t you?”   Debbie says that he should not waste money on the car when he does not need one.
"I haven't been slaving just to pay for college"
“I haven’t been slaving in the café just to pay for college,” he tells her, and Mark offers to lend him their car.
Ricky helps himself to some toast
“No offence, Dad – but it isn’t a ‘babe magnet’,” Ricky smiles, grabs a piece of his father’s toast and leaves the house.
"A last-minute party is a lot of work!"
Dani is emphatic that organising a last minute party is a lot of work, but Dylan assures her money is no object, stressing he wants ‘a classy do’.
"Are you saying the Deri isn't classy?"
“Are you trying to say the Deri isn’t classy?” Dani demands, and he reminds her that Garry would not be happy if she refuses the business.
The additional requirements are enumerated
Dani agrees, and then is informed that they will require smoked salmon and canapés, as well as plenty of champagne – not the cheap stuff, besides needing the Deri to be suitably decorated.
"OK – money no object!"
“Remember, money no object!” says Dylan, and wants a taster glass of champagne now.
Guto looks disconsolate
Guto is walking disconsolately along the road when his mother informs him they are having a party for Gran in the Deri later;
"You can bring Luned"
“You can bring Luned,” but he is adamant he does not want her there.
"She's not going to sit down for a meal with me!"
At Llwyncelyn, Eifion cannot envisage Izzy’s mother sitting down to a meal of curry with him;  “We need to sort it out, or there will be tension every time you call,” Izzy tells him.
"I don't want to do that all the time"
He says that he does not have to call there – she can come to him in Penrhewl;  “I don’t want to do that all the time,” she replies, and then Gaynor arrives home.
"What's he doing here?"
“Oh, what’s he doing here?” are her first words, and Izzy explains that Eifion is eating with them tonight;  he goes to his car to fetch the wine.
"Mam, will you please try?"
“I never ask for anything from you, Mam,” begins Izzy, “So will you try to sit down with us tonight – please?”
"Why don't you want Luned to come?"
Jaclyn has just had a shower, and now it is Brenda’s turn;  Guto is not looking forward to the party, and his mother asks him why he does not want Luned to come.  “We don’t have to see each other all the time,” he answers,
"Have you two fallen out?"
and she wonders if they have fallen out.
"We've finished – it didn't work out!"
“We’ve finished, OK?   It just didn’t work out – it’s none of your business, anyway!” he growls
"Leave him alone, Mam"
Tesni tells her mother to leave him alone, and pretends she does not know why they have finished;
"I'll try to get him to sort things out with Luned"
“Look, I’ll try to get him to sort things out with Luned, OK?”
A strained atmosphere at the dinner table
Things are very quiet around the dinner table at Llwyncelyn;  “How are things at school?” asks Eifion,
Gaynor scarcely says a word
and receives a monosyllabic reply.
"Are you looking forward to the holidays?"
His next question, “Are are you looking forward to the holidays?” is treated in much the same way.
"We're going to have a couple of awaydays"
Izzy speaks, “Eifion and I intend to have a couple of awaydays – Eisteddfod, Green Man – you’re welcome to join us,” but Gaynor regards this prospect with disgust,
"I can't do this!"
and informs them that she cannot do this,
"Why do you have such bad taste in men?"
demanding why her daughter has such a bad taste in men.
"Hywel Llywelyn – the biggest womaniser around!"
Izzy snarls, “You’re a good one to talk – Elgan, Hywel – the biggest womaniser around!   Eifion is nowhere near as bad as him!”   Gaynor says she just does not want Izzy to get hurt,
"I would never hurt Izzy!"
and Eifion emphasises that he would never hurt her.
"I think it's best if you leave!"
“Eifion, I think it’s best if you leave!” Gaynor decides, so he gets up and heads towards the door.
"If he's not welcome, I'm not staying either!"
Izzy stresses that this is her home, too;  “If Eifion is not welcome in your home, then I’m not staying either.”
"You'll move out because of him?"
Her mother laughs at the suggestion she will move out because of him, but Izzy continues, “I’m moving out because of you – you’re trying to control me, but I’m not a schoolgirl!
“Well, stop behaving like one, then!” Gaynor shouts, “Where will you go, anyway?”   Izzy, equally angrily, replies that she will be going to Penrhewl, much to her mother’s surprise.
"Here comes the 'birthday girl"
The ‘birthday girl’, with the rest of the family, arrive at the Deri, which has been suitably adorned.
"You kept this quiet, Gerwyn"
Cassie praises Gerwyn for having organised this, but he points out that Dylan is responsible.
"You're gutted about Luned, aren't you?"
Tesni confides to Guto, “You’re gutted about Luned, aren’t you?   You can tell me – you have to do something to get her back.”
"She just doesn't want to know"
He has said sorry, and does not know what else he can do;  he appreciates that he has really hurt her.
"Show her how sorry you are"
“You must show her how sorry you are,” Tesni continues, “With a romantic gesture,”
"I don't know anything about romance"
but he replies that it is obvious he does not know anything about romance.
"You must use your imagination"
He is told to use his imagination,
He seems to have thought of something
and then walks purposefully out of the Deri, which worries his mother.
Garry recommends some cars to Ricky
Ricky is in the garage, seeking advice from Garry;  “If you want to buy a car, a Corsa or a Punto would be perfect – the Peugeot 106 is a good little car.
"A lot of boys your age go for a 1.25 Ka"
There’s something to say for all three – a lot of boys your age go for a Ka, the 1.25 – the front seat’s higher, so you have better visibility of the road.”
"Three and a half to four grand"
Ricky wants to spend somewhere between £3,500 and £4,000, and Garry is sure he can find something for that much;
"Your cars are expensive!"
“I didn’t say I wanted to buy it from you,” Ricky points out, “I have to shop around, don’t I?   Your cars are expensive.”
"You're more brazen than your grandmother!"
“So you want to pick my brains with no intention of buying from me?” says Garry, and Ricky maintains that advice is free.   “You’re more brazen than your grandmother!” Garry concludes.
"It's just a bit of a tiff, Mam"
Tesni explains to her mother that it is just a bit of a tiff, but Jaclyn does not like Guto being upset;  “And Luned is so lovely.”   She is assured that everything will be fine.
The Joneses are never far away from free food
Debbie and Mark have joined the celebration, and are taking advantage of the free food.
"You went to so much trouble, Dylan!"
Brenda is heaping praises on Dylan for going to so much trouble,
Gerwyn is becoming increasingly irked
and Gerwyn’s nose is seriously out of joint;
"Oh yes, I'm having a great time!"
he sarcastically tells Jaclyn that he is really enjoying himself.
"Can I have a word with you, Luned?"
Guto walks along the street with a box in his hand, and encounters Luned outside the chippy, eating chips with her friend, Nel.
"I was a real idiot"
He would like a private word with Luned;  “I wanted to say sorry – again,” he tells her, “I was a real idiot!”
"Yes, you were!"
She agrees wholeheartedly with this assessment.
“You’re still angry, and you have every right to be, but the thing is,
"I really like you, Luned"
“I really miss you, Luns, because I really like you.”   She confesses that she feels the same about him, and he wonders if they could try again.
"It was a disgusting thing to say!"
“It was a disgusting thing to say!” she emphasises,
Guto's peace offering is unsuccessful
and he offers her the box of chocolates.
"Do you think I'm that cheap?"
“Chocolates?” she exclaims, “Do you think I’m that cheap?”
"Come on, Nel, we're going"
She goes back to her friend, collects her chips, and they walk away.
Feeling the effects of the champagne, Brenda boasts, “In my heyday, there was no stopping me!”
Dylan has furnished a fancy bottle of gin
At the bar, Dani produces a bottle of gin, paid for, of course, by Dylan.
Guto has come back to the Deri
As Guto walks disconsolately into the Deri, Brenda wants to say a few words;  “Thanks to you all for coming tonight –
"You've made an old woman very happy"
“seeing you all here has made an old woman very happy.   I was dreading turning 70, but you were right, Cassie –
"70 is the new 40!"
“70 is the new 40!   I’ve had a fantastic evening –
"All the thanks go to Dylan!"
“and all the thanks go to Dylan – you have organised a very special evening!”
Gerwyn turns and goes home
Gerwyn, feeling completely superfluous, walks out and goes home, while Tesni enquires how Guto’s romantic gesture went;
"Nightmare, Tes – thanks – for nothing!"
“Nightmare, Tes!” is his reply, “Thanks – for nothing!”
Eifion is concerned how Eileen will react
At Penrhewl, Eifion is worried about what will be Eileen’s reaction to the news,
"It's not my house, you see"
admitting that it was a shock, and that this is not his house.   Izzy apologises, and admits she should have thought of that,
"Don't upset yourself"
but he urges her not to get upset, and hugs her,
Eileen is somewhat surprised
just as Eileen comes into the room.
Gerwyn starts getting rid of the food
At number 10, Gerwyn has begun the process of emptying the various plates of food into the bin when Jaclyn returns home;
"Did you organise a party too?"
“Did you organise a party for Brenda, too?” she asks.
"You can't compare it with champagne and smoked salmon"
“You can’t compare sausages on a stick with champagne and smoked salmon!” he groans.   She is sure that Dylan would not have arranged anything if he had known,
"He always upstages me – and he has the cash to do it!"
but Gerwyn maintains, “He always upstages me – he’s got the cash to do it – I can’t compete.”
"You don't need to compete with anyone"
Jaclyn replies that he does not need to compete with anyone, and honestly, she does not like smoked salmon;
"I prefer a sausage on a stick!"
“I prefer a sausage on a stick!”
". . . especially after what happened with Cadno"
Eifion apologetically explains, “I know seeing Izzy and me together was the last thing you expected, especially after what happened with Cadno.
"We're going to try and make a go of things"
“We’ve been seeing each other for a few weeks – and we’re going to try and make a go of things.   But Gaynor is not a fan.”
"We hoped that perhaps she could . . ."
Izzy adds that she has left Llwyncelyn, and Eifion says that she does not have anywhere to go;  “We hoped that perhaps she could . . .”
". . . stay here?"
Eileen completes his sentence, “Stay here?”
"Only for a week, at the most"
Izzy insists that it is just until she sorts herself out – a week at the most.
“I know we’re asking a lot,” Eifion goes on, and would understand if Eileen refused;  they do not want to be a nuisance.
Eileen actually agrees to this arrangement
They are surprised that Eileen agrees so readily;  “Jim will be fine – like you said, it won’t be for ever.”
"I've got another babysitter now!"
Then Huwi can be heard crying, and Eileen says, “You’re welcome to stay here until you sort yourself out – after all, I’ve got another babysitter now!”
That worked out better than anticipated
They look quite pleased with this outcome.
