"I hope you're as excited about these cooking lessons as me!"
Sioned arrives at Penrhewl, and tells her mother, “I hope you’re as excited as me about these cooking lessons today!”
"I didn't know they were starting today"
but Eileen did not know they were starting today, and Sioned says there is no point in waiting, as people want to get started.
"There is one small snag"
“There is one small snag,” she continues, “DJ was supposed to take the lesson today, but he’s ill, and I really don’t want to cancel.”
"No, I'm much too busy, Sioned"
Eileen has already worked out what she is implying, however regrets that she is much too busy.
“But they’re part of the business – and you said you would help,” Sioned whines.   Her mother points out that a bit of notice would have been nice, and is told, “Great things never came from comfort zones, Mam!”
"But DJ takes over next week, all right?"
Eileen reluctantly agrees, on condition that DJ takes over next week, and wonders where it is to be held.     She is far from happy to learn that it will take place at Penrhewl;  “Where better than the heart of the business?” Sioned demands.
The peace of breakfast-time is shattered . . .
Gwyneth is eating her breakfast when there is a knock at the door;  it is Jessie, whom she was not expecting.
. . . by the arrival of Jessie
“I thought I’d check how things are going,” she says, “It’s not easy to begin with, but you will get the hang of it.”
"The extra money comes in handy"
Gwyneth is just happy to have the extra money, and Jessie appreciates that children are not cheap.
“Not if they have a Lego obsession!” groans Gwyneth,
"Oh – the devil's bricks!"
and Jessie refers to them as ‘the devils bricks’, having found one in the fridge the other day;  and she is sure that they walk in the night.
"I'll make you a coffee"
Gwyneth will make her a coffee, but Jessie stipulates fresh coffee if possible.
"I haven't agreed to it yet"
Jaclyn tells her mother-in-law that she is considering doing a gig in the Deri, but has not agreed yet;  “Oh, you have to,” urges Brenda, “I’ve always loved your voice – I’ve heard those tracks that you did as well, and things are bound to improve as you get older.”
"Some of us get old very elegantly!"
Jaclyn says she will ignore the last part of that, but Brenda maintains, “Some of us get older very elegantly!”
"I've eaten them"
Gerwyn arrives home for his lunch, and finds that the leftovers from last night have already been eaten by his mother.
"Jac's going to do a gig in the Deri"
She informs him, “Jac’s going to do a gig in the Deri.”
Jaclyn points out that Garry has asked her but she has not made a decision yet.   “The thought of standing there on my own – urgh!” she grimaces,
"You have to do it, Jac!"
but Brenda insists that she has to do it.
"She should do what suits her"
Gerwyn, on the other hand, considers that Jac should do what suits her, and no-one should put pressure on her.
Jaclyn reminds him that he has a cooking lesson this afternoon, but he protests that he does not need lessons;
"I don't trust her to go on her own!"
“Perhaps not, but I don’t trust your mother to go on her own,” is the reply, “And I want her to start pulling her weight.”
"Why don't you want her to do this gig?"
When Jaclyn goes upstairs, his mother asks Gerwyn, “Why don’t you want her to do this gig?”   He answers that he is not stopping her,
"It can be slightly intimidating"
but, as she is so talented, it can be slightly intimidating.
"You should be proud of her, not jealous"
Brenda tells him he should be proud of her, not jealous.
"She'll realise she can do better than me"
Gerwyn protests, “I am proud of her – I wake up every morning and can’t believe my luck that she chose me.   But if she starts gigging again . . . I’m just scared that she’ll realise she can do better than me.   Someone sexy – who can sing – and wears leather trousers or something.”
"Leather trousers are too difficult to get off!"
Brenda points out that Jac loves him;  “The only thing that stopping her singing will do is push her away.   No-one wants a man in leather trousers, anyway – far too difficult to get off!   If you’re so worried, why don’t you find a way to be part of it?
"You have the voice of an angel!"
“You have the voice of an angel!”
Tyler is looking at that laptop again
Tyler is looking at the laptop, but quickly closes it when Iolo arrives home;
"You haven't moved all morning!"
“You haven’t moved all morning,” Iolo scolds him.
"What am I supposed to do – handstands?"
Tyler wonders what he is supposed to do;  “Handstands?   I’m ill.”   He does not want any food, but Iolo protests that he will never get better if he does not eat. “Oh, you’re a doctor now, are you?” Tyler snarls, “I need some peace.”
"You can have some peace – I've had enough!"
Iolo announces that he can have as much peace as he likes;  “Because I’ve had enough!” and he marches out through the back door.
His fixation with Aled has not abated
Tyler reopens the laptop and we can see that he is looking at Aled Richards’ CnocCnoc page.
"Gwern can have them if he wants"
Inside number 9, Jessie says that she is sorting her son’s toys out, and Gwern can have them if he wants;
"If you've got any Power Rangers or Ninjas"
“If you’ve got any Power Rangers or Ninjas, he’ll be delighted,” is the reply.
Then Jessie's mood turns serious
Then Jessie adds, “I’ve had a couple of complaints that some of our stuff is weak – cut – they’ve noticed a difference.”   Gwyneth pleads ignorance about this;  “Trust me, you wouldn’t be the first to try,” says Jessie,
"I wouldn't know where to start"
but Gwyneth emphasises that she would not know where to start.
"Good – because it's not worth it!"
“Good – because it’s not worth it,” Jessie adds, “I’m happy to forgive once, but I hate repeating myself – mind you, even the kids know not to push Mami too far!   Right, I’d better go –
"I know that coffee was instant!"
“don’t try and fool me again – I know that coffee was instant!”
"Do you really think I good enough?"
At Penrhewl, as he puts on his apron, Gerwyn tells his mother, “I’ve never sung in public – do you really think I’m good enough?”   She replies that he has his mother’s genes.
Eileen wants to get started with the lesson, as she is a nervous wreck;
"There should be one more, called Kirsty"
Sioned informs her that they are still waiting for one more, called Kirsty, who saw the ad on Instagram.
"Today we're making a crumble"
They decide to start without her, and Eileen announces that they are making a crumble,
Sioned captures pictures for the Cae Glas website . . .
while Sioned takes pictures with her phone.
“Most of the ingredients come from Penrhewl,” says Eileen,
. . . and Brenda wants to vet them first
and Brenda wants to vet the photos before they go online, to see if she approves of them.
Now she has changed her name to Kirsty
Then the missing person arrives, and we see that it is Jessie, who is masquerading as Kirsty.
At least, Tyler has got off the sofa
Tyler fetches a glass of water, then returns to the laptop
He cannot resist contacting Aled
and sends a message to Aled, “Are you OK?”   Then he notices at the corner of the screen, a suggestion that he might be interested in another group,
Another group, on which he finds his picture
entitled ‘Lifelong School Teachers’, which has his picture,
Tyler is concerned
and he looks very concerned.   He clicks on the group, discovers it is closed, and he must request to join.
"It's this knife's fault!"
The lesson at Penrhewl is in progress, and Brenda is blaming her knife for the fact that she is not cutting her fruit small enough, but Gerwyn accuses her of not trying,
"A bad cook blames her tools"
and Eileen comments, “A bad cook blames her tools.”
Brenda is more of the opinion that the reason is a bad teacher,
"Don't take photos of me"
and Kirsty/Jessie asks Sioned not to take photos of her, as her situation is a bit complicated.
"Now we weigh 200g of oats"
Now Eileen informs them that they need to weigh 200g of oats.
"Our Jac is going to start gigging!"
Brenda asks Kirstie, “Have you heard about our Jac?   She’s going to start gigging!” and Gerwyn unsuccessfully tries to stop her;  “She’s going to do an exclusive gig in the Deri,” she goes on, “I’ll let you know when it is – and she might have a surprise guest on the stage.”
"Great things never came from comfort zones"
Sioned thinks that it is great that Jaclyn is doing it;  “As I’ve learned, great things never came from comfort zones,” she says.
"You, Me and Self-Esteem?"
Kirsty recognises that quote and says, “You, Me and Self-Esteem?   That book changed my life!”
She and Sioned have a lot in common
She realises that she and Sioned have a lot in common.
Tyler adopts the pseudonym 'David Gwyn' . . .
Tyler is still on the laptop, and is entering his name as David Gwyn;
. . . and requests to join the group
he requests to join the group,
He waits impatiently
and waits anxiously to be approved.
"My crumble looks nothing like Gerwyn's"
Eileen says that she likes to put some cinnamon on her crumble;  Brenda grumbles that her crumble looks nothing like Gerwyn’s.
"What's going on here?"
Then Jim comes in, and is very disapproving of what is going on.
"It's just a cooking lesson, Jim"
Eileen explains they are having a cooking lesson, and as DJ is ill, she is the second choice.
"Right, I want everybody out!   Now!"
“Sioned making plans behind my back again?   Did you know about it?” he demands, “Right, I want everybody out!   Get out, now!   I don’t want these people in my home!”   He is in such a state that they do not argue with him, but quickly leave.
"Jim, what's wrong with you?"
Sioned demands, “Jim, what’s wrong with you?   They’ve paid to be here!”   He makes it abundantly clear that he does not give a damn,
"You must stop reacting like this, Jim!"
and Eileen insists he must stop reacting like this.   “You’re an embarrassment, Jim!” roars Sioned.
"I don't have to listen to this – you can go too!"
“I don’t have to listen to this – you can go too!” he shouts, “I don’t want you here!”
"Right, I'm going!"
Sioned is only too pleased to comply with his request.
"Jim had a meltdown!"
Jaclyn is surprised to see Gerwyn and his mother home so soon, but he reports, “Jim had a meltdown!”   Brenda points out he was not expecting to see them. “Why are you sticking up for him?   Don’t say you have a crush on him!”
"The one I want is Garry Monk"
She assures him that is not the case – the one she wants is Garry Monk.
Then she encourages him to tell Jaclyn,
"I haven't made up my mind, Mam!"
but he protests that he has not made up his mind;
"He's going to join you on stage"
his mother informs her, “Ger is going to join you on stage when you’re gigging – as a duo!”
He is at pains to emphasise that it is only an idea;
"A chance to enjoy ourselves again"
“Now that the kids have grown up, I thought it was a chance to enjoy ourselves again – you know, do something together.”
She looks rather askance at the idea
She replies, without very much conviction, that it is a lovely idea, and his mother wants him to sing something now.
He sings 'Sosban Fach' . . .
After some protests, he launches into a rendering of ‘Sosban Fach’.
. . . and Jaclyn is not exactly appreciative
While his mother describes it as lovely, Jaclyn’s expression does not seem to concur with this.
"You made a fool of Sioned and me!"
In the kitchen of Penrhewl, Eileen asks, “Aren’t you going to say anything?   You made a fool of Sioned and me!”
"Are you still going on about that?"
“Are you still going on about that?” he groans, and she emphasises that Sioned was trying her best.   “Sioned is always trying her best with something!” he snarls, and Eileen accuses him of being completely unreasonable.
“How many times have I asked you to stop with these ideas?” he shouts, “I want a quiet life!”
"You need to apologise to everyone"
She tells him that a holiday is what he wants, because he has not been himself for a long time;  he needs to apologise, to her, to Sioned, and everyone else was there.
"No!"
His response to this is an emphatic, “No!” so Eileen determines that she will have no choice but to do his dirty work for him, and walks out of the house.
Sioned cannot contact Dylan
In the Deri, Sioned is looking anxiously at her phone when Jessie/Kirsty comes up to her
"I don't mean that angry man who kicked us out!"
and comments, “I’d say you’ve got man trouble!   And I don’t mean that angry man who kicked us out earlier!”
Sioned says that she was about to text her to apologise, but instead will buy her a drink.
"Dylan's never available when I need him"
She explains that the man giving her hassle is Dylan;  “He’s never available when I need him.”
"It only lasted a week and a half"
Jessie wishes that her type was a boring, sensible accountant;  “But I’ve tried it, and it only lasted a week and a half.   He always answered his phone, cooked, never argued – but he talked about tax returns and the Eisteddfod.
"Worse than that, he wore socks and sandals!"
“But, worse than that, he wore socks and sandals!”
Gwyneth's bags of white powder
Meanwhile, at number 9, Gwyneth is busily placing small plastic bags of white powder into an envelope, and looking very pleased with herself.
"Slept in his dressing gown and nothing else!"
Jessie continues, “And this other guy slept in his dressing gown and nothing else!”   Eileen comes in and is glad that ‘Kirsty’ is there;
"I wanted to apologise to you"
she wants to apologise.   She is told that ‘Kirsty’ attended the lesson to cheer herself up, but Sioned has done that now.
Geraint has not seen Brenda's allegedly lost purse
Guto comes into the Deri and asks Geraint, who is behind the bar, whether he has seen a purse anywhere, which his Gran maintains she has lost.   Geraint cannot help there, and Guto suspects, “She may have hidden it, so she doesn’t have to pay the chips later!”
"He got some stick from a few pupils"
Then he sees Iolo at the bar and enquires about Mr Davies-White;  “I was just worried about him, after the other day.   He got some stick from a few pupils – they were being idiots, and then he went home ill.   It wasn’t his fault at all, and everyone feels a bit guilty now.”
"He'll be all right, Guto – thanks for checking"
Iolo assures him that Tyler will be all right, and thanks him for checking.   “We all know that he hasn’t done anything wrong,” says Guto, as he leaves.
"That boy, off his head on drugs"
“Considering this is a small village, a lot goes on,” remarks Jessie, “Like that boy falling off the roof, off his head on drugs.”   Sioned is pleased that he is getting better now, but Jessie goes on, “I heard that someone gave his father the supplier’s phone number – and now he’s passed it to the police.
"That was a stupid thing to do, Sioned!"
“That was a stupid thing to do, Sioned!”
Sioned is becoming worried
Sioned is looking very worried by this time, and asks who ‘Kirsty’ is;  she is informed that she does not need to know, but what she does need to do is to keep her mouth shut from now on.
"Your Mam's a lovely woman – you don't want to lose her . . ."
When Sioned get up to leave, she is told not to make a scene;  “Your Mam’s a lovely woman, isn’t she?   You don’t want to lose her as well, do you –
". . . like your brother, father and your sister, Angela!"
“like you lost your brother, your father and your sister, Angela?”
"I won't say a word"
Sioned is shaken, and promises not to say a word;  she watches anxiously as ‘Kirsty’ leaves the Deri.
"I thought I could stay with you for a while"
At Penrhewl, Jim is on the phone;  “I thought perhaps I could come out and stay with you for a while.
"I had a flight for next week in mind"
“No, I haven’t booked anything yet – I had a flight for next week in mind –
"That's great, thank you!"
“that’s great, thank you!”
At last the word 'ACCEPTED' appears on the screen
Tyler is still awaiting approval of his request to join the group, and suddenly the word ‘ACCEPTED’ appears on the screen, so he signs in, only to see on the screen pictures of himself, with various captions, including,
The various captions allude to him . . .
“I’m the sixth form boys’ number one fan,”
. . . and his alleged preference for sixth form boys
“Ready for you, boys!” and, “Who wants a piece of this?”
"Look, I'm sorry, Ty"
Then Iolo comes into the house, wanting to apologise, but Tyler, in tears, closes the laptop and walks into the kitchen.
"Are you all right?"
Iolo asks if he is all right, and Tyler replies, “No!”
"Everything will be all right"
Iolo hugs him, and assures him that everything will be all right;  Tyler, of course, knows this is far from being the case.
