At Maes-y-Deri, the preparations are in full swing
At Maes-y-Deri, Mark is pumping up balloons and Kath has put up a banner, reading, “Good luck, Debs.”
Debbie arrives home
Debbie comes in to find they have been busy, and wonders who Mark is dressed up as;  she guesses that it may be Jane Fonda,
"Mr Motivator!"
but is informed that he is ‘Mr Motivator’.
Ricky has made a protein smoothie
Ricky has made a protein smoothie for his mother, and she remarks that it tastes nice,
""Although it looks like pond water!"
“Although it looks more like pond water!”   He is really gutted that he cannot take part in the race,
"You'll be dealing with the social media stuff"
but she assures him that he will be dealing with all the social media stuff – that is just as important.
Kath adds, “And if someone falls, we’ve got a nurse!”
Ricky is looking uneasy
Ricky looks rather uneasy at this comment.
Britt works out how much the chippie can contribute
In the chippy flat, Colin is making a cup of tea when Britt comes in, calculating, “Twenty portions of chips for free at £2.50 each – that’s fifty pounds!   That’s enough of a contribution, don’t you think?”
"It might be awkward if there aren't enough chips"
He points out that it might be rather awkward if there are not enough chips for everyone.   “You have to draw the line somewhere!” she protests.
"Have you heard about the schoolgirl who's gone missing?"
“Have you heard about this schoolgirl who’s gone missing?” he asks, “She’s from just outside Cwrtmynach – she’s in school with Aaron, but they haven’t named her.”   Britt predicts that she will have run off with her boyfriend and will be back in a couple of days.
"I have to go and set up the stall"
She does not have time to drink her cup of tea, and must go and set up the stall.
Colin is once again disappointed . . .
Colin is upset about this, and decides to contact ‘Melissa’ again;
. . . and he turns again to 'Melissa'
“Is there any chance we could meet this afternoon?
"Oh, it's Colin, by the way"
“Sorry, this is Colin,” he adds, as an afterthought.
DJ is in charge of the chip stall
Outside they are cordoning off the street, and DJ is manning the chip stall;  Sioned warns him not to eat all of them, and wants him to taste the drink she has prepared.
"It's terrible about that schoolgirl, isn't it?"
He says that it tastes perfect, and remarks, “It’s terrible about that schoolgirl, isn’t it?   Haven’t you heard?
"They've named her as Jamie Fenchurch"
“The girl who has disappeared – they’ve just named her as Jamie Fenchurch.”
He shows Sioned his phone . . .
He shows Sioned Jamie’s picture on his phone and asks if she has seen her around the place;  Sioned looks troubled as she replies that she has never seen her.
. . . then serves Beti with a portion of chips
DJ’s first customer arrives in the form of Beti,
Sioned is livening up her lemonade
we see that Sioned is adding vodka to the lemonade she is about to drink.
"You ought to make the portions of chips smaller"
Britt comes round the corner, and advises him to give smaller portions of chips;  then she calls to Colin to come with her, as Garry wants them to do him a favour.
Britt wants Colin to go with her to the Deri
She apologises for being short with him earlier, and they head towards the Deri.
Debbie encourages everyone to come
Hywel is conducting an interview with Debbie for CwmFM, and she says, “I’d like to say to everyone listening at home, come to Cwmderi to support us, and help fill the collection buckets, of course!   You can also contribute online.”
Ricky will put updates on Facebook and Twitter
Ricky adds that they can also follow the race at home;  “I’m going to put updates on Facebook and Twitter.”   Hywel interrupts to say that he will probably also be providing first aid when needed.
He does not like his mother publicising this
Debbie grabs the microphone and broadcasts, “Because our Ricky’s going to train to be a nurse.”
Hywel remarks that the health service needs nurses, but Ricky walks away from them,
"The race will soon be starting"
so Hywel continues that the race will soon begin
Colin is doing some wine-tasting
In the Deri, Britt and Colin are tasting some wine for Garry, to help him decide which to stock;  taking a swig, he decides, “This reminds me of something – sherbet fountain –
"The fact it's going up my nose"
“not that it tastes of lemon – no, it’s the fact it’s going up my nose!”
"A zingy French little number"
Then he starts on another bottle, which is described as, “A zingy little French number.
Rhys is running as Tarzan
Out in the street, the runners are all ready for the start of the race, wearing various different costumes – for instance Rhys is dressed as Tarzan.   Kath is carrying some weights, as she will be power-walking, rather than running, because of her knees.
Headmistress Gaynor is equipped with her cane
Gaynor has got into the spirit of the occasion, with a long black gown, mortarboard and cane;  “Right, behave – or the headmistress will punish you severely!” she promises them.
"Oh yeah, Miss!"
“Oh yeah, Miss!” laughs Gerwyn, in his shorts, accompanied by Jaclyn, wearing a cowgirl outfit.   Debbie complains to Ricky about disappearing when he was on the radio.
"You didn't have to tell everyone"
“You didn’t have to tell everyone I was going to be a nurse, did you?” he demands, but as he is about to explain the reason, the runners are all called to attention.
"Is everyone ready?"
“Right – is everyone ready?” shouts Ffion,
The starting hooter soands
and Mark sounds the starting hooter;
The race is under way
the participants begin their arduous course.
"Do you want a  lift, Kath?"
As Kath makes her leisurely progress, Brenda offers her a lift on her mobility scooter, but this is refused.
Mark goes for a drink of lemonade
Mark asks Sioned for a lemonade,
His photo is taken with Sioned
and Ricky would like a picture of the two of them for Twitter;  Sioned thought that Ricky would be dressed up as a nurse today,
"Hilarious!"
but he groans, “Hilarious!” and walks away.
"What's the matter with him?"
She wonders what is the matter with him, and Mark surmises, “Perhaps he’s worried about that girl who’s gone missing.   The police have launched an investigation –
"They'll be questioning everyone in the village"
“they’ll be questioning everyone in the village soon, you’ll see.”   Sioned is feeling increasingly uneasy.
"Yes – chocolate – and vanilla"
Continuing their wine-tasting, Colin maintains, “I can taste chocolate – and vanilla!”
Britt is very impressed
Britt is very impressed by his discerning palate, and he continues,
"I'm getting a bit of . . . leather?"
“Hold on – in the background I’m getting a bit of . . . leather?” and she realises that he has been reading the back of the bottle.
"Col the connoisseur!"
“I was starting to think you were a real connoisseur, and he laughs, “Col the connoisseur!”   He is warned not to give her too much wine, as she must be careful with the tablets she is taking.   They will keep the rest of the wine for the runners when they have finished.   They have really enjoyed this time together.
"I'll be out there in a minute"
He says he will join her outside in a minute, gets out his phone and contacts ‘Melissa’ again;
He cancels his appointment with 'Melissa'
“About our appointment this afternoon – I’d like to cancel it.”
The crowds await the first finisher
The first of the athletes arrive back in the High Street,
It looks as if Debbie will win . . .
with Debbie in the lead, but a few yards from the finishing line, almost collapses,
. . . but she falters, and Gerwyn finishes first
and is too exhausted to continue,
Ricky helps his mother over the line
so Ricky hurries to her aid, and supports her to the finish.   She asks what he wanted to tell her earlier, but he says it can wait until another time.
"It pays to know the shortcuts"
Kath is not far behind, which Mark finds strange, as she was walking;  “It pays to know the shortcuts, so I can be here to celebrate with you,” she answers.
"Speech!"
Jaclyn is calling for Debbie to make a speech.
Debbie thanks all the participants
She announces, “I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who ran today – and thank you to everyone who has supported and donated.   But I am going to name one person – Ricky!”
She is embarrassing Ricky
He is looking very embarrassed by this time.

"I want to say how proud of you I am"
“I just want to say how proud of you I am,” she goes on, “They say that when you’re going through hell, you have to keep going – and that’s what you’ve done – you’ve given us hope that together we can make Cwmderi a safe place to bring up our children – a place without drugs.”
Sioned is feeling guilty
Sioned is looking rather sheepish as she stands listening,
"She sounds as if she's standing for election"
and Ffion wonders if Debbie is standing for election.
"I don't want another family to go through it"
Debbie continues, “Today is very important, because I don’t want another family to have to go through what we’ve been through.   But there’s still a lot of work to do – there are still buckets around the place,
"Empty your pockets and support the campaign!"
“so empty your pockets and support the campaign!”   She receives a round of applause.
"Oh – 'Melissa'!"
In the shop, Colin is staggered to see ‘Melissa’, who did not know that he worked there.
"Sorry I had to cancel my appointment"
He apologises for cancelling the appointment earlier, at short notice;
"The usual 'fee' is it?"
“The usual ‘fee’, is it?” he says, and he parts with another £50.
"Col, I'm going to help Garry"
Then Britt comes in to inform him that they have packed up the stall, and she is going to help Garry in the Deri.
"Hello, I'm Lisa
She is introduced to Lisa, who says she was just getting directions to Brynawelon, and Britt hurries off to the Deri.
"Thanks for not letting on"
“Thanks for not, erm, letting on that you know me,” says Colin,
"I', still paying a fortune to keep  Mam in Brynawelon"
and Lisa (‘Melissa’) complains that she is still paying a fortune to keep her mother in Brynawelon.
Colin interprets this as a blackmail attempt
He suspects that she is trying to blackmail him, and insists that he does not have a penny in the bank.
"I'll buy them somewhere else!"
“Whatever you think of me, I haven’t come here to blackmail you!” she angrily responds, “I’m here to buy biscuits and tissues for my mother.   Do you know what?   I’ll buy them somewhere else!”   She storm out of the shop.
The weirdly-clad runners need refreshment
After their exertions, the runners have adjourned to the Deri, and Kath thinks that they need a group photo;
"I didn't run, Mam"
Ricky will not join them, arguing that he did not run,

so Mark takes the photo of their smiles.   Kath tells him they have work to do, and will get some poppadoms on the way.
"What's the matter, Ricky?"
Debbie wants to know what is the matter with Ricky;
"I'm not going to do the nursing course"
he informs her, “I’ve been trying to tell you – I’m not going to do the nursing course – I’ve decided to postpone it for another year.”
Sioned is listening to this conversation, as Ricky insists that he cannot do it;  “I decided a couple of days ago, and I wanted to tell you earlier, but I didn’t want to spoil your day.”
"Mam – don't go!"
Debbie abruptly walks out of the pub.
"Why are you giving up the course?"
Sioned asks, “Why are you giving up on your course?” and he snarls that he just does not want to do it;  “All right – there’s no need to be like that,” she replies.
"I'm going home!"
DJ has just emerged from the toilet, and asks her where she is going;  “Home,” she gloomily tells him.
Hywel catches sight of Lisa
Hywel comes in, and notices Lisa, so he naturally goes across to her;
"Are you on your own?"
“Are you on your own?” he enquires.   She says that she is meeting a friend from work, and he tries to find out what her job is.
She calls it, 'The Care and Welfare Sector'
“I’m in the care and welfare sector,” she delicately informs him, “I help people who can’t help themselves – unlike you successful entrepreneurs.
"You're used to helping yourself!"
“You’re used to helping yourselves – aren’t you?   Are you looking forward to tomorrow night?”
"It's a chance to measure the opposition"
She has a leaflet in her hand, and Hywel says that it is a chance to measure the competition;  she is under the impression he has nothing to worry about,
"My friend has cancelled"
then receives a text message that her friend has to cancel.
He takes advantage of the situation;
"I could make you something in the house"
“Perhaps you could come and have that meal with me, then.   Tapas – or I could make you something in the house!”
"I haven't seen Chez Hywel Llywelyn - not recently"
She agrees, remarking that she has not seen Chez Hywel Llywelyn – not recently, anyway.   He looks extremely pleased with himself.
Sioned is not at all happy
Sioned is not in a good mood as she enters the shop flat;
She gets out the bottle of vodka . . .
she takes the part bottle of vodka from her bag, and fetches tablets from an ornament on the shelf.
. . . and washes down a tablet with it
She swallows one, washed down with a generous swig of vodka.
"No, you meed more chillies, Mam"
At Maes-y-Deri, Mark advises his mother that the curry needs more chillies.   She predicts that they will have flames coming out of their ears;
"And our backsides!"
“And our backsides!” he laughs.
"Ricky wants to postpone his course for a year!"
Debbie comes in, exclaiming, “Have you heard – Ricky wants to postpone his nursing course for a year?”
"I'm not ready to be in hospital"
Ricky confirms that this is true, pointing out that he is not ready to treat patients – or to be in a hospital – it is too early.
"Let's sit down and have a nice meal together"
Kath proposes that they all sit down and have a nice meal together.
Hywel is plying his guest with champagne
At Hywel’s house, they have already emptied one bottle of Champagne, and Lisa wonders if he always drinks it.
"I don't like the cheap stuff"
He replies that he always keeps a bottle in the fridge, and does not like the cheap stuff.
"How does the prospective councillor like to spend his money?"
“How does the prospective councillor like to spend his money, then?” she asks, and he says that he likes a bit of adventure – and things of high quality.
"You know what you like, then"
“You know what you like, then,” she goes on,
"And I know what you like"
and he is very confident that he knows what she likes,
He kisses her
as he kisses her.
The atmosphere is rather fraught
Around the meal table at Maes-y-Deri, the atmosphere is rather frosty;  “You might feel differently after Christmas,” Debbie suggests, “Why don’t you wait a few months before you decide?”
"I've made my decision, Mam"
Ricky makes it quite clear that he has made his decision, but his mother continues that there is no reason not to start his course.   “I’m not going to change my mind, all right?” Ricky tells her, “I’ve phoned the department anyway, so everything’s arranged.|
"Remember how much falling out there was?"
“Do you remember how much falling out there was when you changed your mind and decided not to do law?” demands Debbie, with an angry tone,
"You made a huge decision!"
“You made a huge decision to change what you wanted to do!”
“And now I’ve made a bigger decision!” he stresses.
"Don't spoil this special evening"
Mark urges Debbie not to spoil this special evening,
"I was going to be a special evening!"
but she points out it was going to be a special evening.
"You've raised a lot of money, Debs"
Kath is adamant that it has been a good day;  Debbie has raised a lot of money, and a lot of attention to the cause.   “But it means nothing now – because it was all for Ricky!” she rages.
"I can't win, can I?"
Ricky has had enough of this;  “I can’t win!   I disappointed you when I enrolled on this course – and now I’m disappointing you by withdrawing!”
His mother insists that all she wants is for him to succeed;  “It breaks my heart to see you give up!”   Kath reminds her that he is not giving up, but merely postponing it.
"Another year of your life wasted!"
“Another year of your life wasted!” Debbie shouts.
Ricky exclaims, “I’m sorry, OK?   I’m sorry for being a failure!   I can’t imagine being in a hospital – having to treat someone like me – I don’t think I could handle it!   So I’m sorry.”
He walks away from the table,
"I should be apologising"
and his mother admits that she should be the one who apologises;  this is her fault, and she is so ashamed, because she is responsible.
"You supported me through everything"
He argues that it is not her fault, as she has supported him through everything.
"I don't know how I would have handled it"
“I don’t know how I would have handled this, if it hadn’t been for you.”
Ricky hugs his mother
He hugs his mother.
