A diagnosis has been made
At the hospital, Britt and Colin are facing a deputation of the staff;
"Are you sure of that?"
he demands if they are sure of their diagnosis.   Britt sighs, “At least, we know what it is – hallelujah!”
"From complete euphoria to deep depression"
The doctor informs them. “As the name suggests, you go from one ‘pole’ to another – from complete euphoria to deep depression.”
"I've always been up and down, haven't I, Colin?"
Britt recalls that she has always been up and down like a yo-yo.   “It can be an inherited condition,” the doctor explains, “But there are many reasons why it could have flared up recently – a hormonal imbalance,
"A traumatic experience or stress"
“a traumatic experience or stress – they can all exacerbate it.”
"Can you sort me out, Doc?"
Britt enquires, “Can you sort me out, Doc?” and she is told that now they have a diagnosis, they can give her the appropriate medication to level the mood swings. This is very good news to Britt, who says, “Put some ketchup on that, and I’ll swallow a bucketful of tablets!”
It is pointed out to her that it can take a few weeks for the treatment to take effect,
"You'll have to put up with the mood swings a bit longer"
and she warns Colin, “You’ll have to put up with my mood swings for a bit longer.”
“But I have to be honest with you,” the doctor goes on, and Britt expects there to be side-effects, like going to the toilet all the time, but she will get a bedpan.   The doctor warns that there is no cure for the condition,
"You shouldn't say that in front of Britt"
and Colin is surprised that she has said that in front of Britt, who protests that she can cope with bad news.
"Then you can carry on with your life"
As soon as they control the condition, there is no reason why Britt cannot carry on with her life, and she tells Colin that it is very good news.   They leave her to look at the explanatory leaflet, reminding Britt that she is not alone.
Britt is overcome by the good news
“They can help me with it,” says Britt, and is in tears as she hugs Colin.
Eifion is hoping to see Izzy
In the café, Eifion receives a message from Izzy, asking if he is around;  he replies that he is in the café.
Gwen is on duty today
Hywel has just been served with a cup of coffee by Gwen,
and Eifion remarks, “End of the world, is it?” seeing his dejected expression.
Hywel moans bitterly about Rhys and Ffion
Hywel cannot resist talking about Rhys and Ffion;  “You and Ffion are close, aren’t you?” he says, but Eifion greets the news with disbelief,
"How long's it been going on, then?"
and wants to know how long this has been going on.
Eifion has worked out that Hywel is not happy,
"Would you be happy if your son spoiled your chances?"
and is told, “Would you be happy if your son spoiled any chance you had?”
"Perhaps Rhys has done you a favour"
Eifion considers that getting back together with an ex is not a good idea, and that perhaps Rhys has done him a favour.
Hywel seems quite sure that there is no romance there;
Hywel is scathing about them . . .
“Rhys is enjoying being with an experienced woman, and Ffion is having a midlife crisis.”
. . . and as soon as Rhys comes in, he goes out
Then Rhys comes in, but his father glowers at him and walks out.
"Ooh – you've made a mess there!"
“Ooh, you’ve made a mess there!” chuckles Eifion, and Rhys realises that his father has let the cat out of the bag;  Your father’s ex?” Eifion gloats.
"And Ffion feels exactly the same"
Rhys maintains that he could not stop himself, and that Ffion feels exactly the same – he loves living with her, since his father kicked him out.
"Your Dad thinks you're just having some fun upstairs!"
Eifion enjoys revealing, “He doesn’t think you have real feelings for each other – he just thinks you’re having some fun upstairs!”   Rhys insists that he would not put his father through that just for some fun, and Eifion comes to the conclusion that he is suffering from a lack of sleep.
"That was the Coroner's office . . ."
Kelly tells Siôn that she has just had a call from the Coroner’s office;  “They’re releasing Ed’s body –
". . . do they expect me to turn up with a coffin, or what?"
“do they expect me to turn up there with a coffin, or what?”   He tries to encourage her, as she has already started making arrangements;
"There's loads left to do"
“I know, but there’s loads left to do – I don’t have a clue about hymns and readings,” she wails.
"I'm more than willing to help"
Siôn is more than willing to help, and they can discuss it with the undertaker.
The baby is noticeably developing
“Who’s going to read a memorial for a murderer?” she demands, and for the first time, we are able to see the physical signs of her pregnancy.
Changing the subject, Siôn suggests they could have a barbecue this evening, as Anita would love eating outside.
"This is something I have to face"
Kelly replies, “Siôn, stop, please – I know you’re trying to distract me, and I appreciate your help, but this is something I have to face.
"I'm not backtracking now!"
“I’ve said I’m going to arrange a funeral, and I’m not backtracking now!”
She sets to work with the laptop
She opens the laptop.
Ffion gets Arwen a drink . . .
At Cysgod y Glyn, Ffion is rather flustered, and as she gets a drink from the fridge for Arwen,
. . . which slips from her grasp
drops it on the floor.
"Isn't Mam silly?"
Rhys has just come in, and remarks to Arwen, “Isn’t Mam silly?”   Ffion is furious with herself for making such a mess, and Rhys proposes that he takes Arwen out, as he needs to go to town to get some supplements,
Arwen wants to go to town with Rhys
and she seems keen to go with him.
“Don’t worry – I won’t let her out of my sight,” he assures Ffion;  she warns him not to take this the wrong way,
"I don't want you getting too close to her"
but she does not want him to get too close to Arwen.   She will be very upset if they break up.   “You don’t have a lot of faith in our relationship,” Rhys snarls,
"I have to put Arwen first"
but she insists that she has to put Arwen first.
“But it’s better that we’re mates, don’t you think?” he suggests, and Ffion says that she will come with them;  once more he shows his ingratiating smile.
Britt is dozing when Colin returns
Colin returns to Britt’s room in the hospital and finds her asleep;
He has brought a message and a card
when she wakes she says she was only dozing.   He has brought a message for her from Aaron, and a card from Dai and Diane, as well as a copy of the Western Post.
"The chip portions are much smaller"
A note from Dai reads, “Hurry back to work – the chip portions are much smaller than the ones you serve.”
Britt stumbles upon the headline
However, when she picks up the paper, she is concerned to see the picture of Ed on the front, headlined, “Cwmderi murderer found dead after fall.”
"What's this about him being a murderer?"
Colin had not had a chance to tell her about Ed dying, but she asks, “What’s all this about him being a murderer?   Who did he kill?”   She becomes rather emotional,
"Is everything all right?"
and the doctor, who is passing, enquires if they are all right.
"I'm sorry for not hiding it"
Colin explains is that she is reading about something terrible that happened in the village, and he apologises for not hiding it.
"Wow – Ed!   And I thought I was nuts!"
Britt comments, “Wow – Ed!   And I thought that I was nuts!   Right, now I want a pee!”
"Is she all right on her own?"
The doctor confirms to Colin that she will be fine to go on her own;  “This illness isn’t supposed to change anything,” she assures him,
"You have to be more honest with Britt"
“You have to be more honest with Britt.”
"I don't know how to treat her"
He replies that he does not know how to treat her – what to say – what to tell people in the village.   “It’s a lot to take in –
"I don't think I'm coping very well"
“and I don’t think I’m coping very well!” he groans, and the doctor tells him it will be a long process, but for now,
"You're doing a great job, Colin"
“just being here is enough, and she confirms that he is doing a great job.
Rhys downloads an app . . .
As they return to Cysgod y Glyn, Arwen is eager for a new app on the iPad, which Rhys downloads for her;  “It’s the one we saw advertised in the shop – it’s only £2, and she’ll be happy for hours,” he tells Ffion,
. . . which is frowned upon by Ffion
who has been trying to get her to spend less time on it.
"She can record us telling stories"
He tells Ffion, “This app’s brill – it will help her learn how to draw, and she can record us telling stories.   Don’t worry, I won’t make a habit of buying her presents.”   Ffion does not appear to be happy about this.
Rhys explains to Arwen – and she is a quick learner
He tells Arwen, “When Mam reads you a story, you can record her, so it matches the pictures.”   Ffion finds that she has forgotten salad and needs to go to the shop;
Arwen wants to go with her Mam . . .
Arwen wants to go with her,
. . . but will not relinquish the iPad
but refuses to leave the iPad behind.
Rhys is full of himself, as always
Yet again, Rhys looks very pleased with himself.
Hywel very pointedly avoids Ffion
Hywel is hobbling along the street when he sees Ffion coming round the corner;  he turns and walks away, which upsets her.
"Hello, Arwen"
Eifion is also approaching,
"How's the new lodger settling in, then?"
and asks, “How’s the new lodger settling in, then?   You could have told me, you know.”
Arwen activates the 'record' button
We see that Arwen has activated the recording function on the iPad app, as Eifion continues,
“I don’t think he’s sleeping in the spare room!”   Ffion reassures him that she is not looking for a long-term relationship, and he wonders whether Rhys is happy with that arrangement.
"We haven't talked about it yet"
“We haven’t talked about it yet,” Ffion replies,
"He's like a schoolboy in love with his first girlfriend"
but Eifion says that Rhys is like a schoolboy in love with his first girlfriend – he adds that Rhys is not very intelligent.
Arwen appears to be concentrating
At this point Rhys joins them, and tells Ffion that he fancies a pint before dinner.   When he has gone,
"He wants a mother, not a girlfriend!"
Eifion advises her, “He wants a mother, not a girlfriend.”
Is Arwen plotting to get rid of Rhys?
Arwen is still clutching her iPad, presumably having recorded everything.
The funeral business is taking its toll
At Y Felin, the funeral arranging is becoming too much for Kelly;
"What am I doing, Siôn?"
“What am I doing, Siôn?” she sobs, and he expresses his willingness to help her.   “I’m going to be paying for the funeral of a man who tried to kill me!
"It doesn't feel right"
“It doesn’t feel right.   He wasn’t even religious, and neither am I.”
"You don't need a religious service"
Siôn points out that she does not need a religious service, but only a few words at the graveside.
"Just press the button and let him burn!"
“Perhaps Auntie Anita was right, the crem would be best – just press the button and let him burn!”
"I'll contact Ed's brother, Andrew"
Siôn knows that it is hard, and nobody expects her to face it alone;  he suggests phoning Ed’s brother, Andrew, who should shoulder some of the burden, then they will go through the hymnbook together.
Britt talks on the phone to Aaron
Britt is on the phone, informing Aaron that they call it ‘Bipolar’, but there is no need for him to worry;  “With a bit of luck, I’ll be home before long!”   Colin confirms that Aaron is doing well, and has been looked after by Dani me and him,
"I should be washing his pants and socks!"
but Britt muses, “I should be washing his pants and socks – I have to get through this for his sake.”
"I'll go, and let you get some rest"
Colin will go now, to give her a chance to get some rest,
"The doctor didn't say you can go home yet"
and she wants to accompany him, but he reminds her that the doctor did not say anything about going home yet.   She is confident that as soon as she gets her tablets she will be able to return home.
"They want to make sure you get the right dose of medication"
“They need you to stay here for a while – they want to make sure you get the right dose of medication,” Colin points out,
"You don't want me to come home"
and she reaches the conclusion that he does not want her to come home.
"Of course I do, Britt!"
“Of course I do!” he protests.
"I'm an embarrassment to you"
“I’m an embarrassment to you – you don’t want people to know,” she goes on,
"We'll get through this together, Britt"
but he assures her that they are going to get through this together, that he would never be embarrassed by her.   He still looks very confused.
"Going for a pint while a woman's cooking your dinner"
In the Deri, Eifion remarks, “Lucky man – going for a pint while a woman’s home, cooking dinner.”
"I do my share in the flat"
Rhys replies that he does his share in the flat, clearing up after Arwen.   “A bloke your age should be sharing a flat with mates – cans and takeaway cartons everywhere.
"We're having a great time!"
“You don’t fool me – you’ve come here for a bit of peace and quiet.”   Rhys replies that he and Ffion are having a great time.
"I'm not sure she sees it like that"
“I’m not sure she sees it like that,” Eifion goes on, “It’s just the vibes I get – look, I’ve lost my head over several women in the past,
"If she isn't keen, you're wasting your time"
“and if she isn’t as keen as you, you’re wasting your time.”
"You're jealous because you don't have anyone"
Rhys is adamant that he does not need the advice;  “You’re just jealous because you don’t have anyone!”   Eifion replies that he is fine,
Eifion has a message from Izzy . . .
then receives a text from Izzy, informing him that she is busy,
. . . which he finds discouraging
and looks discouraged.
Andrew does not anything to do with it
Siôn has contacted Andrew, who wants nothing to do with the arrangements, or to come to the funeral;  he also forbids them to contact Gemma.
"What am I going to do, Siôn?"
“What am I going to do, Siôn?” asks Kelly, and he says she does not need to arrange a funeral at all.
"Let the council do it?"
“Let the council do it?” asks Kelly, and he explains that it would remove all the pressure from her.
"You have to make a decision and stick to it"
There is no way a easy answer to this, but she has to make a decision and stick to it.
She looks up 'Public Health Funerals'
Kelly looks up ‘Public Health Funerals’ on her phone, and contacts the number given;
"I want help to arrange a funeral, please"
“I want help to arrange a funeral, please.”
Aaron does some research
In the Deri flat, Aaron is looking up ‘Bipolar Disorder’ on the laptop when Colin returns, and shows him the leaflet from the doctor.
"She sounded quite jolly, didn't she?"
He comments that his mother sounded quite jolly, and Colin says it was a great relief to get a diagnosis, and to start on the medication.
"She should have had the diagnosis earlier"
“She should have had that diagnosis earlier than this,” Aaron protests,
"What am I supposed to tell my mates, Col?"
but Colin urges him to look forward now.   “What am I supposed to tell my mates?” he says, and Colin points out that the doctor recommends being completely open with everyone, although he personally does not think it is a good idea.
"We should come to terms with it first"
“We should come to terms with it as a family first,” he recommends,
"Everyone will find out in the end"
but Aaron knows that everyone will find out in the end;  he considers that everyone should be told now, before she comes out,
"Aaron's right, you know, Colin"
and Dani is also in favour of this.   Colin acquiesces,
"We'll start telling people tomorrow"
and suggests that they start telling people tomorrow, although he does not look entirely happy about it.
"Eifion was trying to wind me up"
Ffion is preparing the dinner when Rhys comes back earlier than expected, complaining that the company in the Deri was boring.   “Eifion was trying to wind me up,” he reports,
"He said there wasn't much hope for us"
“He said that I’m more keen than you, and there wasn’t much hope for our relationship.”
"Why would he say such a stupid thing?"
She wonders what made him say such a stupid thing, and Rhys is worried that she might have talked to Eifion about them;  she assures him she would not do such a thing.
"Perhaps we should have slowed things down"
However, she says that perhaps they should have slowed things down, instead of giving people an opportunity to gossip.   She also mentions that they have hurt Hywel terribly,
"You come first for me, Ffion – you know that!"
but Rhys insists there was no way of avoiding that;  “You come first for me, Ffion – you know that!
"Blood isn't thicker than water this time"
“Blood isn’t thicker than water this time.”
Despite her reservations, she kisses him
Although rather reluctant, she kisses him.
