Colin paces around . . .
During the night, Colin is up and walking around the flat;
. . . looks out of the window . . .
he looks out of the window, then switches on the iPad to see if there is any more news.
. . . and checks for further developments
His phone sounds, and he debates whether to answer it;
"Who was on the phone?"
then Garry comes in and asks, “Who was on the phone?”   Colin replies that it was Eileen, but he did not answer it, as she would only have been asking about Britt.
"Eileen would only have been asking about Britt"
“I don’t have the strength,” he groans, and confirms that he has heard no more from the police.
"There was a body in the lake"
At Penrhewl, Eileen is leaving a message for Colin;  “There was a body in the lake – we don’t know who it was, but as Britt is missing, I thought that you should know.”
"Mam – you shouldn't have said that!"
Sioned has just come into the room and makes it clear does not approve of what her mother has done;  “Phone me back – that’s all you should have said,” she tells Eileen, but she insists that Colin has the right to know what other people are saying.
"That's the job of the police"
Sioned points out that is the job of the police.
"I'd want my friends to tell me"
“If that happened to Jim, I’d want my friends to tell me,” says Eileen, but Sioned reminds her that the body could be anyone,
"We're not going to get any sleep tonight"
and doubts if she will get any sleep tonight, so they decide to have a glass of wine.
Ed has crept back to the flat to collect some things . . .
Ed returns to the café flat, hurriedly collecting certain items and putting them in his rucksack,
. . . then leaves again
and then going back downstairs.
Anita rings round the hospitals
Anita is speaking to a hospital, asking if Kelly has been admitted;
"She's not at Glangwili or Bronglais"
she tells Siôn that Kelly is not at Glangwili (Carmarthen) or Bronglais (Aberystwyth).
“It’s completely bizarre,” she says, but Siôn encourages her not to worry too much.
"I've phoned her dozens of times!"
“I’ve phoned her dozens of times – and the phone’s not even ringing now!   She never turns it off.”   He suggest that the battery may be flat;  “What – and Ed’s as well?” she demands,
"Something odd's been going on between those two"
“Something odd’s been going on between those two for weeks – remember she wouldn’t tell him about the baby?   They’re hiding something.”
"Perhaps they've gone away to try and patch things up"
“Perhaps they’ve gone away to try and patch things up – that’s possible,” Siôn tells her, but she maintains that they should phone the police, an idea which Siôn considers rather extreme.   “They might be in the flat,” he says,
"Let's go over to the flat now!"
so she insists that they go over there right away.
Colin has listened to Eileen's message
Colin has just listened to the message on his phone and looks absolutely aghast;  Garry asks who it was,
"There's a body in the lake"
and Colin groans, “There’s a body in the lake – Eileen said – but she doesn’t know who it is.
DI Davies arrives
At that moment there is a tap on the door, and DI Davies comes in;  Garry growls that he wants answers now, but the DI informs him, “We’ve found a body.”
"Is it a woman – is it Britt?"
They demand if it was a woman – if it was Britt,
"I can't reveal any details"
but she cannot reveal details, other than that a woman’s body was found.   “We’re working hard to find out who it is.”
Garry demands that he go with her to see this woman,
"Sorry, Mr Monk – that's not how it works!"
but the DI replies, “Sorry, Mr Monk – that’s not how it works!   Unfortunately, I can’t tell you any more now, but I will have more information tomorrow.
Colin anticipates the worst
Colin is trying to prepare himself for the worst.
Anita finds the flat empty
Anita and Siôn arrive at Kelly’s flat, but there is no reply to their calls;  Anita discovers that there is no-one there,
Siôn finds evidence that someone has been there
while Siôn notices there are a cup and some uneaten sandwiches on the table, indicating that someone left in a hurry.
"She wouldn't go anywhere without this!"
Then Anita finds Kelly’s bag, containing her purse;  “She wouldn’t go anywhere without this, Siôn –
"I don't like this – it's not right!"
“I’m telling you, I don’t like this – it’s not right!”
Siôn phones the police
Siôn gets out his phone and calls the police.
Kelly sits, bound, in the house
Kelly is sitting, shivering in the abandoned house;  Ed comes in and comments, “Oh, you’ve woken up – you must be shattered.   Sorry about tying you up, Kel, but I couldn’t take the risk of you running to the police.”
Ed unties her
He unties her and produces a bag containing food,
"Where are we?  What are we doing here?"
as Kelly asks, “Where are we?   What are we doing here?” and he replies that they are safe there.
"What if someone comes?"
She removes the ropes and wonders, “What if someone comes?”
He is confident that they will not be disturbed as no-one lives there, and passes some food to Kelly;
"You must be starving"
“You must be starving,” he says and she begs him to let her go.   “I can’t do that – not yet,” he tells her,
"What's your plan, then?"
so she demands what his plan is now.
“You’re panicking,” he says, “And I can understand that, but we’ll work things out – we always do.
"What happened to Angela?"
Then she asks what happened to Angela,
"Your chips are getting cold"
but he simply urges her to eat the chips, as they are getting cold.
“What have you done to her?” she continues, then screams,
"What have you done to her, Ed?"
“What have you done to her, Ed?”
"Shut up and sit down, Kelly"
He menacingly warns her to shut up and sit down,
She follows instructions . . .
and she is so frightened that she does so.
. . . and Ed eats his chips
He eats his chips, looking at her with a cold, calculating stare.
"This is not your fault, Col"
Colin says that he has been so unreasonable, but Garry tries to assure him that it is not his fault;  “This isn’t the first time she’s disappeared, is it?” Colin adds,
"Remember when she went Christmas shopping?"
“Do you remember her turning up in a taxi outside the Deri?   She’d been Christmas shopping for days in the Christmas markets.   You said back then that Britt would never hurt herself.
"That body isn't Britt – no way!"
“That’s what you said – that body isn’t Britt – no way!”
Garry is not so sure
Garry, however, does not look so confident.
"How long do you think the body's been in the lake?"
As they drink wine in the kitchen at Penrhewl, Sioned wonders, “How long do you think the body’s been in the lake?   It must be in a terrible state if it’s been there for a while.   Imagine how ashen it looked – no wonder Eifion and Izzy ran away!”
"It's not right to talk about Britt like that"
Eileen tells her to stop, “Think of Colin and Aaron – it’s not right to talk about Britt like this.”
"We don't know if it is Britt yet"
Sioned points out that they do not know if it is Britt yet, but her mother goes on, “Even if it’s not Britt, you should show some respect –
"Some family's life will be ruined tomorrow"
“some family’s life will be ruined tomorrow when the body’s been identified – put yourself in their shoes.”
Ed has scoffed all his chips
Ed has been wolfing down his chips;
"You don't have a plan, do you?"
Kelly, with tears streaming down her face, says, “You don’t have a plan, do you?   I disturbed your plan yesterday and that’s why we’re here.   What happened to Angela?   Please tell me, because I can’t stop thinking about it – and it’s driving me crazy!”
Ed sits, expressionless
As Ed sits, stony-faced, she sobs, “You kissed her – and then you stabbed her!
"What's happened to you?"
“What’s happened to you?   I don’t know you!”   He replies that of course she knows him, as he is the same person,
"I had to do what I did – for your sake, and the baby's"
and once he has explained everything to her, she will see why he had to do what he did – for her sake – and the baby’s.
DS Jenkins has visited Siôn and Anita
Anita is being interviewed by DS Jenkins, who says that she did the right thing;
"When did you last see Mr and Mrs Charles?"
“When did you last see Mr and Mrs Charles?” he asks, and Anita answers that it was Wednesday, but she spoke to Kelly yesterday morning, when she was in the café, and she was fine then, and looking forward to going to Debbie’s party.
"I've tried to phone several times"
“I suspected something was wrong when they didn’t turn up – and I’ve tried to phone several times,” she says,
"Kelly wouldn't go anywhere without her purse"
“The thing is, Kelly wouldn’t go anywhere without her purse.”
Then she is asked about the couple’s passports, and the officer will conduct a search of the flat.
"And she's pregnant!"
Anita mentions the fact that Kelly is pregnant, and begs him to find them.
"We shall have to tell Aaron tomorrow"
Colin sits in the Deri, and Garry says that they will have to tell Aaron tomorrow;  Colin has convinced himself, “Nothing’s changed – we’re still in the same position we were –
"There's no new information about Britt, is there?"
“there’s no new information about Britt, is there?”
"We have to face facts, Col"
Garry points out that the police obviously think the body is Britt, and they have to face facts.
"Don't you dare lose faith in her!"
“Don’t you dare lose faith in her!” Colin snarls, but Garry says it is too much of a coincidence.
"Angela had been blackmailing me for months"
Ed begins his explanation, “Angela had been blackmailing me for months – she wanted £10,000, or she would take the recording to the police.”
"What actually happened at Pwll Bach?"
Kelly asks what actually happened at Pwll Bach, and he answers that he pushed her;
"It was an accident, but I thought she'd died"
“It was an accident, but I thought she’d died.   I didn’t have a choice – I would be in prison if I hadn’t paid her.   I had no option.”
"The muggings, the taking from the caff, Penrhewl?"
Kelly asks, “The muggings – the takings from the caff – Penrhewl?   Did you break into Penrhewl as well?”
"It was all Angela's fault"
He explains that it was Angela’s fault, for putting too much pressure on him – he was in a corner.
“If she had taken that recording to the police, we couldn’t be a family – you can see that, can’t you?” he pleads,
"Everything I've done has been for you and the baby"
“Everything I’ve done has been for you and the baby – there’s nothing I wouldn’t do to protect you – that’s how much I love you!”
"Where's Angela?"
Again Kelly demands, “Where’s Angela?”
"This is about us, Kel"
but he insists that this is about them.   “You can’t keep me here for ever,” she goes on, “Auntie Anita will be looking for me – you have to let me go – for the baby!”
The police will launch an investigation
DS Jenkins advises Siôn and Anita that they are going to launch an investigation into the disappearance of Mr and Mrs Charles, and will need photos of them;
Anita gets a text message
as Siôn goes to get one, Anita’s phone sounds, and she gasps with surprise.
“It’s Kelly – the message says, ‘Sorry, I have only now seen the missed calls – my phone was dead.   Ed and I have gone to Paris for a romantic weekend’.”
"I'm sorry for wasting police time"
She is very apologetic for wasting police time,
"I'm just glad they're safe
but the officer is just glad that they are safe.
"I feel such a fool!"
“I feel such a fool!” she tells Siôn, but he says that she knows now that they are safe and that nothing has happened to them.
Anita replies that she hopes they enjoy their holiday
Meanwhile, Kelly watches, as Ed receives a reply on her phone;  “I’m glad you’re OK – enjoy your holiday,” he reads.
Kelly weeps bitterly
Kelly collapses into floods of tears, and Ed consolingly tells her not to worry;
"Tell me – is Angela dead?"
“Is Angela dead?” she asks yet again, and he replies that Angela is in the past.   “Tell me – just tell me!” Kelly screams,
"She's out of our lives, once and for all"
and he smiles as he continues to insist that she is gone out of their lives, once and for all.
"You did kill her!"
“You did kill her!” Kelly groans,
"It was self-defence"
but he describes it as self-defence, and urges Kelly not to cry.
"It's a good thing, Kel . . ."
He maintains that it is a good thing, as Angela can never threaten them –
". . . she can never threaten the baby again!"
or the baby – ever again.
